Jeff Bezos Set to Acquire Minority Stake in Liverpool for $6bn
Jeff Bezos is closing in on Anfield. Not as a guest in the directors’ box, but as part of a powerful new consortium set to buy a significant minority stake in Liverpool in a deal that would value the club at around $6 billion.
An announcement could come as early as this week, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) preparing to confirm the agreement, according to Sky News. If completed, it would be one of the biggest financial transactions in football history.
A New Power Bloc at Anfield
Bezos is one of three heavyweight figures in a group led by businessman Amit Bhatia. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is also involved, with the consortium expected to acquire a stake of just over 30 per cent in the Premier League club.
The numbers behind the names are staggering. Bezos is estimated to be worth more than $280bn. Saverin’s fortune is reported to exceed $32bn. Bhatia is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and has already had a taste of English football ownership as a former shareholder in Queens Park Rangers.
This is not a quiet, background-style investment. This is a statement of intent.
FSG’s Next Chapter
FSG have controlled Liverpool since 2010, when they bought the club for around £300m at a time of deep financial trouble and boardroom chaos. Under their stewardship, Liverpool have climbed back to the summit of European and domestic football, lifting a sixth Champions League trophy and ending their long wait for a league title with two Premier League crowns.
The Boston-based group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been open about exploring a strategic minority investment. Last month, FSG confirmed that Bhatia’s consortium had formally expressed interest in such a deal.
Now that interest is hardening into one of the most eye-catching ownership moves the sport has seen.
Minority Stake, Major Questions
On paper, this is a minority investment. FSG will remain in control. The club’s structure, at least initially, stays intact.
But the identities involved change the conversation.
Bezos, Saverin and Bhatia bring enormous financial firepower into Liverpool’s orbit. Their arrival will inevitably trigger debate over the club’s long-term direction: is this purely a strategic cash injection, or the first step towards a gradual shift in control?
For now, the plan is clear enough. A sizeable stake, a huge valuation, and FSG still at the wheel. The intrigue lies in what comes next, and how a club built on tradition and community navigates life with some of the world’s richest men now sitting at the table.
