Jeff Bezos Consortium Nears One-Third Stake Purchase in Liverpool FC

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly part of a group moving closer to purchasing about a one-third share in Premier League club Liverpool FC. According to Sky News, this investor consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

The current Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed last month they had received an approach from Bhatia's investment group. An FSG spokesperson told AFP: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club." Notably, Bhatia was until recently involved as a shareholder with Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

Sources suggest the consortium is finalizing terms to buy roughly a one-third stake, and FSG might announce the deal imminently. Bezos, aged 62, ranks among the wealthiest globally, with Forbes estimating his fortune at over $280 billion. Saverin's wealth is valued around $33 billion.

Bezos has considered previous sports investments, including bids for NFL teams such as the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but opted not to proceed with either. This Liverpool deal would mark a significant American capital infusion into the Premier League, valuing the 20-time English champions near $6 billion.

Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million). In 2023, FSG sold a minority stake to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity.

On the pitch, Liverpool secured the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season under manager Arne Slot, though the Dutch coach was dismissed in May after a challenging campaign.
