Jamal Musiala's Neurological Condition: Recovery Update
Jamal Musiala has revealed he is dealing with a neurological condition after collapsing twice in the space of a week, but insists he faces no long-term health danger and remains optimistic about his recovery.
The Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder, 23, went down again during a preseason friendly on Wednesday (AEST), only days after a similar incident against Leipzig. On both occasions he required on-field attention, sparking concern for one of European football’s brightest talents.
Two collapses in a week
On Wednesday, Musiala had only just come on as a second-half substitute when he suddenly went to ground. Teammates and opponents quickly formed a protective circle as medical staff rushed on. After treatment, he was helped to his feet and escorted off, walking but clearly shaken.
It was a worrying repeat of what had happened on Sunday (AEST) in a friendly against Leipzig, when he also collapsed. Then, he was able to leave the pitch under his own power, though witnesses noted he still looked dazed.
Bayern’s official match report played down the drama, referring only to a “setback” and saying Musiala had to be substituted with a knock minutes after coming on.
The pictures told a different story. So did Musiala.
Musiala explains diagnosis
Later on Wednesday, the midfielder addressed the situation directly in a post on his Instagram account. He revealed he has been diagnosed with temporary “but easily treatable absence seizures” linked to a neurological issue.
“These can lead to the moments that happened recently, such as against Leipzig or even now in Heidenheim,” he wrote, referencing the two incidents that had alarmed fans and teammates.
Crucially, Musiala stressed that doctors had reassured him about the broader implications.
He said there was “no additional health risk” and described himself as “very optimistic”, praising the medical care he is receiving and underlining that he is working closely with specialists.
“In close coordination and regular communication with experts, it has been my personal wish to face the challenge and, with the endorsement of the neurological specialists, to devote myself to what helps me most in recovery: to simply live my everyday life and keep up with my passion of playing football,” he wrote.
The message was clear: this is a serious issue, but one he believes is under control.
Supercup on the horizon
The timing could hardly be more delicate for Bayern. The Bundesliga champions face Borussia Dortmund on Sunday AEST in the German Supercup, the traditional curtain-raiser to the season and the first real statement game of the campaign.
Bayern are back in action at 4:30am AEST on Sunday, but it remains unclear whether Musiala will be declared fit to play or whether caution will prevail after two collapses in such quick succession.
For now, the club has offered only minimal detail. The player himself has provided the reassurance. How quickly he returns to the pitch – and in what capacity – will be one of the early storylines of Bayern’s new season.
