Jadon Sancho Leaves Manchester United After Fractured Career

Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United career is over. The club have confirmed they will not activate the one-year option in his contract, clearing the way for the winger to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Sancho’s name appeared on United’s retained and released list published on Wednesday morning, alongside senior departures Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia. The exits of the Brazilian midfielder and Dutch full-back had already been marked publicly, with head coach Michael Carrick leading tributes on the pitch after the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on 17 May. Sancho’s future, though, had been left hanging in the air. Not anymore.

The 24-year-old, signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in July 2021, walks away from United after a strange, fragmented spell that never came close to matching that fee. He has not played for the club since 26 August 2023. A week later came the flashpoint: omission from the squad to face Arsenal, followed by a public stand-off with then manager Erik ten Hag. From that moment, the road back looked long. It has now run out.

Sancho has spent the past three seasons on loan, moving through some of Europe’s most demanding dressing rooms. Borussia Dortmund. Chelsea. Aston Villa. Three clubs, three different European finals, three different competitions. This season he was part of the Aston Villa side that beat Freiburg in the Europa League final, adding another unusual line to an already unconventional CV.

For United, his contribution became little more than a footnote. Aside from a brief appearance as an 83rd-minute substitute in the 2024 Community Shield, he has not pulled on a United shirt in competitive action since that August afternoon. A marquee signing turned into a distant figure, visible mainly in team sheets from elsewhere.

Sancho is not the only one heading for the exit. Youngsters Sonny Aljofree, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Notts County, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will also depart when their deals expire on 30 June. A quiet clear-out, but a clear one all the same.

There is movement at the other end of the pathway. United have confirmed offers are in place for Albert Mills and Dante Plunkett to sign professional contracts in July, a significant step for two academy prospects hoping to climb the same ladder that has carried so many into the first team. There is, for now, no update on England youth international Godwill Kukonki, scorer of United’s goal in the FA Youth Cup final, whose situation remains unresolved.

Beneath that, the next wave is already forming. It is anticipated that Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick will become scholars for the forthcoming season, two familiar surnames preparing to write their own chapters at the club where their fathers became household names.

United’s list, then, is more than administrative formality. It underlines a reset. Big names leaving, academy hopefuls stepping up, famous legacies looping back into the system. Sancho, Casemiro, Malacia and the departing youngsters move on to whatever comes next.
