For a fanbase that has watched a series of transformative midfielders define eras, the prospect of his sale will not shock many at Anfield. There is appreciation for his journey and his role, but little sense that Liverpool would be losing a cornerstone.

Jones is not the only Liverpool player attracting attention. Tottenham Hotspur have identified Cody Gakpo as a leading target for this window, sensing an opening in a forward line that is quietly being rebuilt.

The Netherlands international may find his status tested by the arrival of Victor Munoz and the possible signing of Bradley Barcola. If those deals materialise, competition in the attacking positions will intensify, and Spurs are ready to move if Liverpool are prepared to listen.
