Ilkay Gündogan Joins British Fund GSS in Montpellier HSC Bid

Montpellier HSC, a club still haunted by its slide into Ligue 2, is edging towards a major shake-up in the boardroom – and a familiar name from the Premier League is involved.

According to L’Équipe, British investment fund GSS is in advanced talks to buy into the club, with former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan part of the bid. Ex-Arsenal, Burnley and Ipswich Town player Daniel Karbassiyoon is also involved in the project.

This is the response to a call for help that has been echoing around the Hérault for more than a year.

Nicollin’s Call for Help

Back in the 2024/25 season, club owner Laurent Nicollin went public with his need for fresh capital. Montpellier, champions of France in 2012, were slipping, and Nicollin knew it.

He sent a ten-page dossier to major French investment banks, effectively putting Montpellier in the shop window without fully putting it up for sale. In that document, he described the move as “throwing a hook into the sea” and made it clear he did not initially want to sell the club outright.

Reality, though, has bitten hard.

Nicollin admitted he might have to accept becoming a minority shareholder if the right offer arrived. “Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year,” he said, a line that now reads like a prelude to what is unfolding.

Relegation, Stagnation, and a Turning Point

The fall he feared arrived in brutal fashion.

Montpellier dropped into Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 season and then failed to bounce back. They did not even reach the promotion playoffs, sharing that frustration with Stade de Reims, relegated in the same campaign and equally unable to mount a serious return bid.

For a club with Montpellier’s recent history, that kind of stagnation stings. It also accelerates decisions.

GSS Closing In

Talk of a British buyer first surfaced in April, when the identity of the group remained under wraps. Now, L’Équipe reports that an agreement between GSS and Nicollin is drawing closer.

Key details are still on the table. It is not yet clear whether GSS will complete a full takeover or settle for a significant minority stake. What is clear is that Gundogan is part of the GSS-led bid, lending the project a high-profile footballing figure with experience at the very top level.

Karbassiyoon’s presence adds another layer of football know-how, this time from a player-turned-operator background.

The structure of the deal will define Nicollin’s future role and, by extension, Montpellier’s identity. But the direction of travel is obvious: the club is bracing for a new era, shaped by British money and guided, at least in part, by a former Manchester City captain who once dictated games on the pitch and now steps into a very different kind of contest.
