Hull City Break Transfer Record for Konstantinos Tzolakis

Hull City have planted a flag in the Premier League ground before a ball has even been kicked. Newly promoted, newly ambitious, and now the proud owners of a club-record signing: Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

The 23-year-old arrives from Olympiacos on a five-year deal, a statement of intent as loud as any roar from the North Stand. The fee remains officially undisclosed, but it is understood to sit around £20m plus add-ons – comfortably eclipsing the £13m Hull paid for Ryan Mason back in 2016.

Since his senior debut in 2020, he has made 131 appearances for Olympiacos and stacked up eight trophies. Four Greek Super League titles. Domestic silverware. And, crowning it all, the 2023-24 Uefa Conference League – a European triumph that pushed his name onto scouting lists across the continent.

The month after that European success, Greece called. Tzolakis made his international debut against Malta and has already collected nine caps, moving quickly from promising understudy to genuine contender in the national setup.

Now comes the real leap.

"I am ready for a new chapter in my career," he said, reflecting on his time in Piraeus. "With Olympiacos, I had a successful career with a Conference League title, championship and a cup, also European games and Champions League. Hull City is something different because we are playing in the Premier League. We have to fight against top players, so it's a challenge for me."

That word – challenge – hangs over the entire move.

Hull are stepping back into a league that devours hesitation and punishes naivety. To entrust the No 1 shirt, and a record outlay, to a 23-year-old from the Greek Super League is bold. It is also entirely in tune with the modern Premier League, where progressive clubs gamble big on goalkeepers who can grow with them.

Tzolakis has already shown he can handle pressure. Title races with Olympiacos. European knockout nights. The scrutiny that comes with being the last line of defence for Greece. But the Premier League is a different kind of storm: relentless, global, unforgiving.

Hull clearly believe he is built for it.

This deal is about more than reflex saves and clean sheets. It signals a club refusing to treat survival as the ceiling. A five-year contract for a young, internationally recognised goalkeeper says Hull intend to build, not just cling on.

For Tzolakis, the path is clear and brutal in its simplicity. Adapt quickly. Command the box. Justify the fee.
