Hibernian's Pre-Season Loss: Valuable Lessons and Player Developments
Hibernian’s pre-season began with a narrow defeat and a sizeable dose of perspective.
A single first-half strike from Luke O’Regan gave Shamrock Rovers a 1-0 win at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday night, but for David Gray the scoreboard was only part of the story.
Heavy legs, useful lessons
Hibs looked exactly like what they are: a squad at the end of a gruelling first week back. Rovers, deep into their own campaign and slick from months of competitive action, moved with the rhythm of a team already up to speed. That contrast told.
Gray spread minutes across his squad and leaned heavily on youth. Zach Bruce, Lewis Gillie, Josh McDonald, Joseph McGrath and Jacob MacIntyre all featured in Dublin, an early taste of senior football against one of Ireland’s sharpest sides. It was physical, it was scrappy at times, and it was exactly the kind of contest that exposes rust and tests resilience.
There were knocks, as you’d expect in a full-blooded summer fixture, but no serious injuries. For a coach trying to build fitness and sharpness without losing key players before the competitive stuff starts, that mattered more than the result.
Gray made it clear to his players that the word “friendly” doesn’t really apply. The disappointment at the defeat was real, but so was the understanding that July is about minutes in the legs and habits in the mind.
Big names absent, opportunities taken
Several senior figures stayed out of the firing line. International quartet Martin Boyle, Grant Hanley, Jamie McGrath and Jordan Obita were not involved, while Josh Campbell, Owen Elding and Callum Wright also missed out.
Their absence opened the door for academy products to stake an early claim. These are the nights when young players either shrink or grow. Gray will have learned plenty about who is ready to push and who still needs time.
Shamrock Rovers, more cohesive and closer to full tilt, punished one lapse through O’Regan before managing the game with the assurance of a side in rhythm. For Hibs, the game tape will be as valuable as any training drill this week.
A long-awaited boost: Molotnikov steps back in
The most encouraging development came away from the 90 minutes itself. Long-term absentee Rudi Molotnikov has finally taken a significant step towards a full return.
Gray revealed that the midfielder trained fully with the smaller group of international players on Tuesday morning and came through the session unscathed. By the end of the week, the plan is for Molotnikov to be fully integrated into the main group.
He is unlikely to feature this weekend against Cliftonville; that would be a rush too far. But his presence back on the grass, back among his team-mates, changes the mood around him. After a long spell out, a full pre-season now offers him the platform to reintroduce himself properly to Hibs’ midfield picture.
Defeat in Dublin will quickly fade from memory. The real story of the night may be that, as Gray shapes his squad for the campaign ahead, one more important piece is finally close to being available again.
