Harry Maguire's Disappointment Over World Cup Exclusion

Harry Maguire cuts a relaxed figure these days, but the sting is still there.

The Manchester United defender has laid bare the moment he discovered he would not be going to the World Cup with England – and the blunt explanation Thomas Tuchel offered before closing the door on one of the country’s most experienced centre-backs.

This was no fringe player clinging on to past glories. Maguire had powered through the 2025/26 run‑in as one of United’s standout performers, steadying a back line under pressure and playing with the authority of a man who expected his name to be inked into the final 26. Instead, he watched Tuchel choose Dan Burn, Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi and John Stones ahead of him.

For Maguire, it landed like a punch he never saw coming.

“It was a surprise… I was really disappointed”

Speaking on The Rest is Football alongside Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Joe Cole, Maguire didn’t sugar-coat his reaction.

“No, it was a surprise at the time,” he admitted. “I said straight away that it was a surprise. I was really disappointed. I thought I did enough to be in the squad and I thought I could have helped the lads out there.”

This wasn’t just about starting. It was about being part of it.

“I thought I would have still had a part to play on the pitch and off the pitch as well,” he said. “So no, I was disappointed at the time, but the manager’s made a decision and he’s gone with his 26 and it’s part of football and I’ll move on quick from here.”

The words are measured. The subtext is not. A player who has been a pillar for England at major tournaments felt he’d done his job again, only to be told his work didn’t count this time.

Tuchel’s FaceTime verdict

The way the news arrived only added to the awkwardness.

Tuchel, Maguire revealed, chose to deliver his decisions via FaceTime – a modern, unforgiving method that leaves nowhere to hide, for either side of the call.

“No, he speaks to everyone, to be fair,” Maguire said. “So he FaceTimes everyone… Yeah, it’s quite an awkward call… I think he FaceTimes everybody. It’s quite a unique way to do it. It makes it harder probably for himself to see our reactions and things like that.”

On the other end of the line, Maguire waited for a reason that never truly came.

“He really said that he can’t really give me an excuse,” the defender continued. “But I think he said that he’s gone with the four lads that he got through the qualifying in the autumn, in the autumn camps where he felt like they did well during them six games.

“But he did say that he can’t really give me an excuse. But listen, that’s football. It was tough to take.”

In the cold language of selection, loyalty to the group that navigated qualifying trumped late-season form. For a player who has delivered in tournament football, that cut deep.

A World Cup that may not come again

What sharpens the disappointment is the calendar. Maguire is 33. The next World Cup feels a long way off.

“I was really disappointed. I wanted to go to the World Cup and play. I’m 33 now, so 37 at the next World Cup. It looks far away,” he admitted.

This wasn’t a demand for guaranteed minutes, just a plea to be part of the journey.

“So I wanted to go, not just play, but like I told the manager, I wasn’t demanding to go and start the games. I’d have been happy to play one minute as long as I was there with the lads. So no, it was disappointing.”

There was no row, no public war of words. Just a seasoned international, told via a flickering screen that his World Cup story might already be over.

Maguire insists he will “move on quickly”. The question now is whether England will one day look back and wonder if they moved on from him just a little too soon.
