Harry Kane Wins European Golden Shoe Again: Aiming for Ballon d'Or
Harry Kane stood in Munich with a familiar trophy in his hands and a very clear target in his mind.
The Bayern Munich striker collected the European Golden Shoe for the second time on Wednesday, rewarded again for being the most lethal finisher across Europe’s top leagues last season. This one, he admitted, felt different. Better.
Kane’s first full campaign in Germany was extraordinary even by his own standards. The 33-year-old hit 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga games, powering Bayern to a league and cup double and recording the third-highest single-season goal tally in the history of the German top flight. Defenders knew what was coming. They still couldn’t stop it.
Add in his work on the international stage and the numbers become staggering. Kane scored six times at the World Cup, taking his total to 14 and making him England’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament. Across club and country, he finished the season with 73 goals. Seventy-three. No wonder he called it his “best season ever”.
That level of dominance naturally drags the Ballon d'Or conversation to his doorstep. Kane didn’t duck it.
He made it plain: he wants football’s most prestigious individual prize. The England captain knows the voting is out of his hands, but he also knows he could hardly have done more. Bayern reached the Champions League semi-finals, only bowing out to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. England went deep too, falling in an agonising 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals.
Those near-misses on the biggest stages have long been part of Kane’s story. The difference now is the weight of silverware and statistics behind his case.
Only two men in history have lifted the European Golden Shoe more often: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi claimed it six times with Barcelona. Ronaldo won it four times, three with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United. Kane now sits just behind that pair, the two defining figures of an era, and very much in their company in this particular ranking.
The comparisons and arguments will roll on until late October, when the Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place in London. Kane knows it. He also knows he has become central to that debate.
“That’s for you guys to debate and fans to debate,” he said of the race for this year’s award, acknowledging the strength of other candidates. “Many players have had great seasons.” The numbers on his side, though, are hard to ignore.
While the spotlight burns brighter, Kane’s future in Bavaria is already being discussed behind closed doors. His current Bayern contract runs until 2027, but he confirmed on Monday that talks to extend that deal are about to begin.
Golden Shoe in hand, eye on the Ballon d'Or, and negotiations looming with one of Europe’s giants: Harry Kane’s next move will say plenty about how long he intends to stay at the very top of the game.
