Chelsea’s Squad Numbers for 2026-27 Season Under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso has taken clearer shape with the confirmation of their squad numbers for the 2026-27 season – and the list reads like a roadmap for who is central to the project, and who is being quietly nudged towards the exit.
Joao Pedro crowned Chelsea’s No 9
The headline change is up front. Joao Pedro has been handed the No 9 shirt, a symbolic upgrade that underlines his status as Alonso’s main striker.
He replaces Liam Delap, last summer’s centre-forward arrival, who drops to No 12. For Joao Pedro, it feels like a natural step. The Brazilian hit 15 goals in 35 Premier League games last season after his £60 million move from Brighton and Hove Albion, and this number switch confirms what his performances already suggested: he is the focal point of Chelsea’s attack.
Jackson back, but questions remain
Nicolas Jackson returns from his loan spell at Bayern Munich and resumes his familiar No 15. His shirt is the same. His situation is not. Doubts still hang over his long-term future at Stamford Bridge, with the club open to movement in the forward department if the right offers arrive.
While Joao Pedro’s promotion sends a clear message, Jackson’s reinstated number feels more like a holding pattern than a fresh start.
Barco steps into No 4 as Tosin pushed down the list
One of the more telling clues comes at the back. New signing Valentin Barco, recruited from sister club Strasbourg, has taken the No 4 shirt. That number previously belonged to Tosin Adarabioyo.
Tosin remains on the books, but his demotion to No 38 is hard to ignore. It is the kind of renumbering that often precedes a departure, and it adds weight to the sense that his future lies away from west London.
New faces, new numbers
Chelsea’s summer business is written all over the list.
- Morgan Rogers will wear No 17
- Danny Welbeck comes in as No 18, adding depth and experience to Alonso’s attacking options
- Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, whose moves were pre-agreed and finally completed this summer, have been allocated No 22 and No 23 respectively, further swelling the competition in the final third
At the back, versatile defender Marco Palestra has been given the No 2 shirt, a traditional defender’s number that hints at a significant role. Maxence Lacroix takes over No 5, vacated by Benoit Badiashile.
Badiashile is closing in on a loan move to Napoli, and his number already belongs to someone else. The club has moved on; the paperwork is just catching up.
Alonso’s blueprint in numbers
Strip away the formality of a squad list and the story is clear. Joao Pedro is the main man up front. Barco and Lacroix are being positioned at the heart of Alonso’s defensive rebuild. Tosin and Badiashile are being eased towards the door. Jackson sits in limbo.
Chelsea’s numbers are set. The real question now is whether this reshaped hierarchy can carry Alonso’s first season in charge where the club expects to go.
