Chelsea 2026/27 Squad Numbers Explained
Chelsea have laid down their numbers for the 2026/27 season – and the shirts tell a few stories of their own.
The bulk of last year’s squad stays as it was. The spine of Xabi Alonso’s side keeps its familiar look. But around the edges, some significant numbers have changed hands.
Joao Pedro takes on the No 9
The headline move sits on the back of Joao Pedro. The Brazil international has stepped into the club’s most scrutinised shirt, moving from 20 to 9. That number belonged to Liam Delap last season; the young forward now slides to 12.
It’s a clear signal of trust in Joao Pedro as a central figure in Alonso’s attack. The burden – and the opportunity – of the No 9 is his.
Fofana goes to 3, Barco claims 4
At the back, Wesley Fofana has taken over the No 3 shirt, left vacant after Marc Cucurella’s transfer to Real Madrid. That switch frees up 29, which now lands on summer signing Pep Chavarria.
Tosin Adarabioyo has moved away from his old number. The defender has been handed 38, while his former No 4 passes straight to another new arrival: Valentin Barco. The Argentine slides into a classic centre-back/left-back number with clear intent.
Two more fresh faces also walk straight into single digits. Marco Palestra takes 2, and Maxence Lacroix pulls on 5 – the number previously worn by Benoit Badiashile.
Big names left without numbers
Badiashile is one of three notable absentees from the list. He, Axel Disasi and Marc Guiu – all left out of pre-season – have not been given squad numbers for the campaign. Their futures, at least in the immediate first-team picture, look uncertain.
Henderson, Rogers and Essugo reshuffle
In midfield, Dario Essugo has shifted from 14 to 16. The vacant 14 doesn’t stay empty for long. Jordan Henderson, one of the most eye-catching summer arrivals, takes it on.
Another statement lies in the teens. Club-record signing Morgan Rogers will wear 17, the shirt previously owned by Andrey Santos before his move to Manchester United. It’s a clear marker: Rogers is expected to be central to Chelsea’s plans.
Academy faces step into the frame
There is also room for youth. Three academy products have been handed squad numbers after impressing on the pre-season tour in Australia and Asia.
Reggie Watson gets 31, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli takes 32, and Tayo Subuloye is given 37. There has been no official confirmation that they are fully promoted to the first team, but the numbers suggest Alonso intends to keep them close.
