Hammarby vs Kalmar: A Crucial Clash at 3Arena

Hammarby’s push for Europe rolls back into 3Arena on Sunday, with Kalmar arriving as the latest obstacle and perhaps the most awkward kind: a team with momentum, but no away form to match it.

Twelve matchweeks in, the table already tells a sharp story. Hammarby sit second on 20 points, occupying the first of the Allsvenskan’s two UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying spots and holding just a two-point cushion over fourth-placed Elfsborg. Kalmar, down in 12th on 13 points, are looking over their shoulders, not up the table, despite a 3-0 win over Orgryte on July 5 that briefly eased the tension.

Hammarby strong at home, shaky at the back

Henrik Rydstrom’s side arrive from a much-needed 2-1 victory over Elfsborg on July 5, a result that stopped a worrying slide and reasserted their European credentials. Before that win, Bajen had lost three straight league games, conceding seven and scoring just three. The wobble dragged them away from any realistic title talk and left them nine points adrift of leaders Sirius after 11 gameweeks.

The numbers underline the contradiction in this Hammarby team. Over their last five matches, they have scored nine and conceded nine, shipping at least two goals in three of those fixtures. They attack with intent, but the door at the back keeps swinging open.

At 3Arena, though, the picture brightens. Aside from a 2-1 defeat to AIK on May 24, Hammarby have been largely reliable in front of their own fans, winning four and drawing one of their other five league games at home. The stadium has felt like a shield for much of the campaign, and they will need that again against a Kalmar side that has started to find results, if not yet a complete identity.

Team selection will be shaped by injury. Full-back Hampus Skoglund limped off last time out, which should open the door for Ibrahima Fofana to come in from the start. Victor Eriksson and Frederik Winther are expected to anchor the central defence, with Persson completing the back line.

In midfield, Markus Karlsson and Tesfaldet Tekie are likely to provide the platform, allowing the creative line of Madjed, Nahir Besara and Lind to operate behind striker Paulos Abraham. Abraham, already on six league goals, will be hunting his seventh, and much will depend on Besara’s ability to find him early and often between Kalmar’s centre-backs.

Kalmar’s momentum meets their away curse

Kalmar’s 3-0 dismantling of Orgryte was one of their most authoritative displays of the season. Toni Koskela’s side dominated the first half, allowing Orgryte just five touches inside the box before the interval, and managed the game with a control that has too often deserted them.

Those three points may prove precious. Kalmar are only two points clear of 14th-placed IFK Goteborg, who currently occupy the relegation playoff spot. Every win feels like a small step away from danger rather than a stride towards mid-table comfort.

There is, however, a clear and troubling split in their form. Over their last five Allsvenskan matches, Roda Broder rank fourth in the division for points gained, with nine from a possible 15 thanks to three wins and two defeats. Yet all that good work has been built almost exclusively at home.

On the road, Kalmar have been a different side. They have lost their last five away league games, conceding 11 goals and scoring only four. Defensive lapses, a lack of control in midfield, and a tendency to fade under pressure have all combined to make every away trip feel like a test of nerve as much as quality.

History offers little comfort. Kalmar are winless in their last six meetings with Hammarby, and defeat on Sunday would mark a fourth straight loss to the Stockholm club. Koskela must find a way to break that pattern without key forward Malcolm Stolt, who is not expected back until later this month.

In Stolt’s absence, the responsibility up front falls to Anthony Olusanya and Abdussalam Magashy, both likely to feature in the attacking line. Behind them, Robert Gojani and Carl Gustafsson should again patrol central midfield, with Sagoe Jr offering width and energy.

At the back, Zakarias Ravik and Melker Hallberg are expected to continue as the central defensive pairing, with Jansson and Larsson operating in the full-back roles in front of goalkeeper Brolin.

Likely lineups

Hammarby possible starting XI:
Hahn; Fofana, Eriksson, Winther, Persson; Karlsson, Tekie; Madjed, Besara, Lind; Abraham

Kalmar possible starting XI:
Brolin; Jansson, Hallberg, Ravik, Larsson; Rosenqvist, Gustafsson, Gojani, Sagoe Jr; Magashy, Olusanya

Prediction

Hammarby have steadied themselves but not fully convinced. The defence still offers chances, and their recent losing streak lingers in the background. Kalmar, for their part, arrive with confidence from their Orgryte win yet burdened by a miserable away run.

The ingredients point towards an open contest rather than a controlled home procession. Hammarby’s attacking edge at 3Arena should bring goals; Kalmar’s improved form suggests they can land blows of their own.

We say: Hammarby 2-2 Kalmar.
