Hamburg Signs Bilal Nadir on Free Transfer from Marseille

Hamburg have turned to the Mediterranean again for their midfield rebuild, snapping up Moroccan international Bilal Nadir on a free transfer from Olympique Marseille.

The 20-year-old arrives as the club’s second signing of the summer, following striker Patson Daka through the door, and has signed what the club describe as a long-term contract. He will wear the number 4 shirt.

A calm operator for the engine room

Hamburg announced the deal on their official X account, confirming that Nadir joins after completing his medical and putting pen to paper at the team’s training camp in Austria, surrounded by club officials. The paperwork is done, the shirt chosen, the next step clear: integrate quickly.

Nadir’s first words as a Hamburg player were brief but telling. "I am very happy to become a Hamburg player, and I can't wait to meet the club's fans and play for this city," he said, setting out his stall with the kind of direct enthusiasm supporters want to hear.

Inside the club, there is a clear sense they know exactly what they are getting.

Sporting board member Kathleen Kruger underlined why Hamburg moved for him: "Bilal is a versatile player who can fill several roles in midfield. His arrival gives us greater flexibility, and he also has a calm personality and fits in with our style of play and our values."

Sporting director Claus Costa echoed that assessment, highlighting the technical and artistic quality of the left-footer, who stands 1.86 metres tall. A tall, elegant midfielder with range and poise: Hamburg believe they have found a profile that can knit their game together.

From Nice streets to European nights

Nadir’s journey has already taken in some serious footballing education.

Born in Nice on 28 November 2003, he came through the academy at his hometown club before Marseille moved to secure him in the summer of 2021. The step up to the Velodrome is never gentle, yet he forced his way into the first team in 2023 and stayed there.

By the time he left, Nadir had played 53 official matches for Marseille, scoring two goals and providing five assists. He tasted the Champions League with four appearances, and added two more in the Europa League. Those minutes at the highest level have sharpened both his decision-making and his temperament.

Now Hamburg want that experience to show in the chaos of their midfield battles.

Morocco’s next in line

On the international stage, Nadir stands on the brink.

Morocco called him into the senior squad in March 2025, a clear sign of how highly he is rated, even though he has yet to make his full debut. Before that, he represented Morocco’s under-23 side and also featured for several French youth national teams, a dual background that has broadened his football education and tactical understanding.

The move to Hamburg gives him a new platform. Regular minutes in Germany, a key role in midfield, and a club eager to lean on his versatility — all of it points in one direction.
