For a few anxious hours on Sunday, Kaizer Chiefs supporters braced for the worst.

Glody Makabi Lilepo, one of the pillars of the club’s recent revival, dropped two short, loaded messages on Instagram: “leaving bye” and “bye bye”. No explanation. No caption. Just those words, paired with images of goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi in one story and goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma in another.

In a fanbase still scarred by years of high turnover and false dawns, that was enough to set alarm bells ringing. Was the Congolese winger about to walk away from Naturena just as he had truly arrived?

All signs say no.

Contract locks in Lilepo’s Chiefs future

Beneath the noise of social media, the reality is far calmer. Lilepo remains firmly tied to Chiefs. He signed a two-and-a-half-year deal in January 2025 as Nasreddine Nabi’s first acquisition of that transfer window, with the club inserting an option for an extra season.

That structure gives Amakhosi full control over his immediate future. He still has a year left on his current agreement, which runs to June 2027, and Chiefs can stretch that to June 2028 if they trigger the option.

Inside the club, there is no sense of a player being eased towards the exit. According to sources at Naturena, Chiefs are not entertaining offers for Lilepo and have not received any concrete approaches. The winger is viewed as central to the project, not a saleable asset to cash in on.

From first signing to key figure

Lilepo did not arrive as a marquee headline-maker, but he has grown into one.

In just 18 months, the DR Congo international has become one of the most influential figures in the dressing room and on the pitch. Since landing in Soweto from Al Hilal, he has racked up 56 appearances, scored 15 goals and laid on five assists.

Those numbers only tell part of the story. He helped drag Chiefs out of a decade-long trophy drought, playing his part in the 2025 Nedbank Cup triumph over their arch-rivals. That victory did more than fill a cabinet; it reset expectations around what this team should be.

This season, he again stood up when it mattered. Chiefs finished third in the league, their best campaign in years, with Lilepo at the heart of the attacking effort. That position secures a return to the MTN8 after a two-year absence and books their place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

For a club trying to re-establish itself among the continent’s elite, those competitions are not optional extras. They are the stage on which players like Lilepo are supposed to shine.

A disappearing post, a lingering question

The manner of the Instagram posts only added to the intrigue. Stories vanish after 24 hours, and Lilepo chose that fleeting format to drop his “leaving bye” messages. No permanent post. No pinned explanation. Just enough to spark rumours, then disappear.

Was he saying farewell to the season? Marking the end of a particular phase with Mzoughi and Bvuma? Sending a private message in a public space? Only he knows the full intent.

What is clear for now is the club’s position: Kaizer Chiefs see Glody Makabi Lilepo as part of their immediate future, not their past.

With continental football returning and domestic standards raised, the real question is no longer whether he is leaving. It is how far he can take this resurgent Chiefs side while he stays.
