Gallagher's Equaliser Saves Spurs in Preseason Draw with Getafe

Tottenham’s perfect preseason record went, but their unbeaten run survived, thanks to Conor Gallagher’s sharp equaliser in a tight 1-1 draw with Getafe at the club’s training ground on Saturday.

This was no ordinary friendly. Seventy minutes only, 35 each way, no crowd, no spectacle. Just a Premier League side being pushed hard by a LaLiga team that finished seventh last season, and a head coach using the quiet to make some loud decisions.

De Zerbi shows his hand

Roberto De Zerbi did not hide his intent. New signings Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson all started, while Archie Gray was handed the armband – a striking show of faith in the young midfielder’s authority at the heart of this evolving Spurs side.

Tottenham tried to impose themselves early. Robertson, already a vocal presence down the left, delivered the first real moment of quality when his whipped free-kick picked out Ben Davies just before the break. The defender met it well, but his header flew just off target, the closest Spurs came to a breakthrough in a first half of probing rather than punishment.

Getafe were compact, disciplined, and content to absorb. Spurs moved the ball, tested angles, but lacked the final touch.

After the restart, the game opened up. Mikey Moore stretched but couldn’t quite turn in a chance soon after half-time, a reminder of how fine the margins were in front of goal. Richarlison then rose from a set-piece and almost caught out David Soria, his header forcing the Getafe goalkeeper into action.

Just when Tottenham looked to be turning the screw, Getafe landed the first blow.

Alberto Risco burst into life in the 55th minute, playing a neat one-two before slipping clear and beating Antonín Kinsky. It was a clean, confident finish, the kind that punishes a defence for a split-second lapse. In a shortened game, it felt big.

Gallagher levels the tone

The response was swift. Five minutes after falling behind, Tottenham finally found the precision they had been searching for.

In the 60th minute, the ball was worked into Richarlison, who occupied defenders and held his ground. The lay-off fell kindly, and Gallagher arrived with the sort of timing that turns a half-chance into a certainty, sweeping his finish home to make it 1-1.

It was a simple goal, but an important one: a reminder of Gallagher’s knack for arriving in the right place, and of the threat Spurs carry when their forwards and midfielders connect around the box.

The momentum was back with De Zerbi’s side. Richarlison, heavily involved throughout, climbed again late on to meet another cross, only for Soria to deny him once more with a strong save that preserved the draw.

Unbeaten, but questions to answer

The whistle went on a 70-minute contest that felt more like a controlled examination than a spectacle. Tottenham’s run of four straight preseason wins is over, yet the unbeaten streak remains intact.

De Zerbi has now seen Tonali, van Hecke and Robertson in his structure, watched Gray wear the captain’s armband, and witnessed Gallagher and Richarlison combine when it mattered.

The result will be forgotten quickly. The impressions left behind – about shape, character, and who he can trust when the real season starts – will not.
