His chance is unlikely to vanish with one unused outing. United’s schedule is stacked. Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds United and AC Milan all await before the Premier League opener against Hull City on August 22. Those fixtures will stretch Carrick’s squad, test his depth and, inevitably, open more doors for the kids trying to force their way through.
