Fiorentina have secured the 18-year-old Argentina international on a season-long loan from Madrid, the clubs confirmed on Friday, handing one of football’s most hyped teenagers a fresh stage in Serie A after a bruising first year in Spain.

From Bernabéu glare to Tuscan rebuild

When Madrid won the race for Mastantuono in June 2025, prising him from River Plate on a six-year deal and fending off Paris Saint-Germain in the process, it felt like the start of another long-term galáctico project. He arrived as the latest jewel of the Argentine production line, a left-footed winger with swagger, vision and a highlight reel that had already circled Europe.

The loan runs until June 30, 2027, a long enough window for real development rather than a quick fix. Serie A has become a proving ground for young attackers in recent years, a league that still values tactical education and patience with potential. For a winger trying to refine his decision-making and end product, it is a demanding but forgiving classroom.

“A special day” and a new chapter

Mastantuono did not hide his emotion as he spoke on Friday.

"It's a special day for me," he said. "I was excited about joining the club... It's a team with a lot of history."

History matters here. Fiorentina know what it means to shape flair players, to turn promise into profile. The club’s recent European runs and domestic consistency have restored a sense of ambition in Florence, and a player of Mastantuono’s ceiling fits that mood.

For Madrid, the move is pragmatic. They keep hold of a long-term asset while easing the immediate pressure. For Fiorentina, it is a calculated gamble on a teenager who has already lived a full career’s worth of expectation.

For Mastantuono, it is something else entirely: a second start before his 20th birthday.

He arrives in Italy with the scars of a tough first season, but also with the same left foot that lit up River and pushed him into Argentina’s record books. If Florence gives him what Madrid could not last year – continuity, trust, a defined role – the winger who once looked like the next big thing might yet grow into exactly that.
