Francesco Totti Reveals Offers from Top European Leagues at Age 48

Imagine making a return to professional football at 48 years old. That was the reality for Francesco Totti, the 2006 World Cup-winning Italian star, who confirmed receiving offers from clubs in top European leagues despite retiring in 2017.

Offers from Serie A Clubs Even After Retirement

In October 2024, Totti received inquiries from Serie A teams like Genoa and Como. He declined both offers, emphasizing the unusual nature of the situation. Genoa's coach at the time, Alberto Gilardino, was also a 2006 World Cup winner and only 42 years old, while Cesc Fàbregas, on the bench at Como, was 37. This meant Totti would have been significantly older than those coaching or instructing him.

"These are not fairy tales, this is the plain truth. Incredible, but true. Crazy,"Totti revealed in his autobiography Oltre (quoted by Corriere della Sera).

Serious Talks and Personal Preparation

Genoa made the initial approach, and Totti engaged directly with club officials, confirming their genuine interest. He considered the decision seriously, resumed training, and adjusted his diet by cutting out bread and sweets—a challenging sacrifice for him.

He noted that physically, he handled the training well, aside from the typical aches expected at nearly 50. Mentally, though, he faced conflicts between desire and hesitation. Totti reflected,

"My head said I could say yes, my heart said no. Then the roles reversed: my thoughts put on the brakes and my pulse sped up."

Ultimately, the key question was whether he could play for any team other than Roma, the club he devoted his entire career to. It was not age holding him back but loyalty.

Loyalty to Roma Trumps Comeback

Totti explained,

"Roma was the deciding factor. Not the problem—it never will be. Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48."

His love for Roma kept him from returning to professional play despite clear opportunities.
