Finley Barbrook Joins Falkirk as 13th Signing

Falkirk’s summer rebuild shows no sign of slowing. Ipswich Town midfielder Finley Barbrook has joined the League One champions on a season-long loan, becoming John McGlynn’s 13th new face of a hectic window – and the manager still wants three more.

The 21-year-old, a 6ft 2in defensive midfielder, links up with the Bairns as they prepare for Sunday’s trip to Motherwell. He comes north on the back of a year in English League Two with Colchester United, where he made 16 league appearances and scored once. Not headline numbers, but enough to convince McGlynn he was worth waiting for.

“Finley’s someone we’ve had on the radar for some time,” the Falkirk boss said. “Obviously I would have liked to have got him in a bit quicker but we’re delighted to have him.”

This is not a speculative punt. McGlynn has targeted a specific profile all summer: height, legs, and composure on the ball in the middle of the park. In Barbrook, he believes he has finally found it.

“He’s had loans at other clubs which is a big plus when you’re bringing players in,” McGlynn explained. “He’s quite an all-rounder in that he can take the ball deep, he can make passes, he’s athletic, he gets about the pitch.

“The size of him, that physicality is something that we’ve been trying to find without losing the quality. Sometimes when you go bigger, big guys can’t do some of the things that the tiny wee guys can do, and likewise, but he’s a well-balanced boy. We’ve been needing someone exactly like that.

“We’ve been patient waiting on him because he was the one that we wanted.”

Patience has been a theme of Falkirk’s recruitment, but there is still urgency behind the scenes. Promotion has brought expectation, and McGlynn is not dressing it up: his squad is not finished.

Asked if more signings were on the way, he didn’t hesitate. “It could be as many as three, maybe three more if everything goes to plan and if we’re lucky enough to get it done,” he said. “It isn’t easy, but we have the scope to do it and we’re trying to do it.”

Barbrook’s arrival adds steel and stature to the spine. The real statement, though, is that Falkirk’s manager is still pushing for more. With the Premiership season looming and Motherwell next on the agenda, the question is no longer whether Falkirk are building – it’s how far this overhaul can take them.
