FIFA Launches Disciplinary Case After World Cup Final Brawl

FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players and a member of Lionel Scaloni’s staff after ugly scenes marred Spain’s 1-0 win in the World Cup final on July 19.

What should have been a night remembered solely for Spain’s triumph now carries a darker postscript: a post‑match melee that spilled far beyond the usual pushing and shoving.

Paredes at the center of flashpoint

Leandro Paredes sits at the heart of the case. The Argentina midfielder faces three counts of assault after sparking the confrontation at the final whistle.

According to the report submitted to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, Paredes violently struck Spain defender Eric Garcia in the throat with an open hand, sending the centre-back crashing to the turf. That blow lit the fuse.

As players rushed in from both sides, the chaos escalated. Paredes, along with Thiago Almada, was then seen shoving Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground as tempers boiled over and benches emptied.

Molina and Ayala also charged

Video footage from the celebrations appears to show the Argentina right-back throwing a punch into the mid-section of Spain captain Rodri as the midfielder ran near midfield, celebrating the final whistle with his teammates. That incident forms a key part of the case against him.

Assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been dragged into the fallout. The former Argentina defender faces one count of assault after video surfaced allegedly showing him punching Spain’s Dani Olmo after the game.

These are not minor infractions. If the assault charges are upheld, Ayala and Molina, like Paredes, are looking at bans of at least three matches.

Unsporting behavior: Gavi also cited

The disciplinary net does not fall solely on Argentina.

Alongside Molina and Almada, Spain’s Gavi has been charged with unsporting behavior, one count each. Under FIFA’s code, that offence carries a minimum one-match ban.
