Fenerbahce Secures €42m Deal for Mason Greenwood

Fenerbahce have won one of the summer’s fiercest transfer chases, striking a deal worth up to €42m with Marseille for Mason Greenwood and prising the winger away from both Atletico Madrid and Al-Ahli.

The agreement, reported by Foot Mercato, sees the Turkish club commit to a €40m fixed fee, with a further €2m tied to performance-related bonuses. For Marseille, it is a sale they did not want to make but ultimately had to. For Greenwood, it is the move he wanted all along.

Marseille’s record sale, forced by the balance sheet

Greenwood had been tied to a long-term contract at the Stade Vélodrome until June 2029, a cornerstone of Marseille’s attacking plans and one of the most valuable assets in Ligue 1. On sporting grounds, keeping him was obvious. On financial grounds, it became impossible.

Under a strict cost-cutting strategy imposed by the OM hierarchy, Marseille were pushed towards a major sale to steady the accounts. Atletico Madrid and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli both tabled higher financial packages, but Greenwood made it clear his preference lay in Turkey and with Fenerbahce’s project.

That stance shaped the market. Marseille accepted the lower package, but in doing so shattered their own transfer record. The deal eclipses the €39m Chelsea paid for Michy Batshuayi in 2016, setting a new benchmark for departures from the French club.

It is a landmark exit, but also a wrench. Greenwood leaves France with numbers that underline why Europe’s elite circled: 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 competitive appearances over two seasons in Ligue 1 and cup competitions. He did not just decorate games, he decided them.

Fenerbahce go big – and think big

Those figures convinced Fenerbahce to push their finances to the limit. The Istanbul giants have handed Greenwood a four-year contract and are reportedly ready to pay him around €10m per season, a salary that places him among the best-paid players in Turkish football.

This is not a vanity signing. It is a statement of intent from a club tired of watching their greatest rivals dominate.

Head coach Ismail Kartal has overseen a sweeping overhaul of the squad, building a group designed to withstand the strain of a long domestic campaign and the demands of European competition. Greenwood drops into that rebuild as a headline act, expected to slot quickly into an attack that will also feature fellow high-profile arrivals Nathan Ake and Vedat Muriqi.
