Everton set for surprise windfall if Man United move for Robinson

Manchester United’s search for a new left-back could end up dropping an unexpected cheque through the letterbox at Goodison Park.

Antonee Robinson, now firmly established at Fulham and widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s most reliable left-backs, has emerged as a target for United. If the deal happens, a chain of clauses stretching back six years will quietly click into place – and Everton will cash in.

From Finch Farm to a financial bonus

Robinson is Everton-grown. He came through the academy at Finch Farm, but never broke into the first team. With Leighton Baines an institution and Lucas Digne the big new signing, the pathway was blocked.

Loan spells at Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic offered minutes, but not a route back to the Goodison pitch. In 2019-20, he made the permanent move to Wigan, accepting that his Everton story would be written elsewhere.

That decision, honest and pragmatic at the time, is now circling back in the form of a sell-on clause masterclass.

The sell-on chain that keeps on giving

When Wigan sold Robinson to Fulham in 2020, they protected their own interests. The Latics inserted a clause guaranteeing them 20% of any profit Fulham make on a future sale.

Everton, though, had already done their homework. Their agreement with Wigan included a separate clause: the Blues would receive 33% of any profit Wigan themselves earn from that sell-on.

So if Fulham sell, Wigan get a cut of the profit. And from Wigan’s cut, Everton take a third.

Right now, Fulham value Robinson at around £28m. Should United – or any other club – meet that figure, Everton are expected to bank roughly £1.5m.

It’s not a transformative sum in an era of £100m transfers. But for a player who left Goodison six years ago without a senior appearance, it’s smart business paying out long after the relationship ended.

Honest talks, clean break

Robinson has spoken before about the conversations that led to his Everton exit. With Baines still vital in the dressing room and Digne starting, the message from the club was blunt but fair: opportunities would be scarce.

He was told he would be waiting on two injuries just to have a chance of starting, and that he wasn’t even making the bench. The advice was simple – leave to play.

Robinson took it. No complaints, no lingering bitterness. Just a career to build.

The move to Wigan gave him that platform. Fulham then elevated him again.

Fulham’s mainstay, United’s target

Since arriving at Craven Cottage in 2020, Robinson has become a cornerstone of Marco Silva’s side. He has racked up 158 appearances, with one goal and 17 assists, but the numbers only tell part of the story.

His pace, recovery runs and energy up the left flank have turned him into one of the most coveted full-backs in the division. That form has drawn United’s gaze as they look to reinforce a position that has been a persistent headache.

If United decide he is the answer, Fulham will demand their price. Wigan will be ready. And in the background, Everton will quietly count the profit on a player who never wore their shirt in a competitive game.

In a tight financial landscape, that kind of foresight matters. The question now is whether United’s need at left-back is strong enough to set the whole mechanism in motion.
