Enzo Fernandez: The Perfect Replacement for Rodri at Manchester City

Joe Cole has backed Enzo Fernandez as the “perfect” man to step into Rodri’s shoes at Manchester City – but warned that even the Argentine might not be enough on his own to fill the void left at the Etihad.

Rodri’s move to Barcelona has blown a hole straight through the heart of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. City are scouring the market for reinforcements, and the spotlight has landed firmly on Fernandez, whose future has become one of the sagas of the summer.

“What a man to try and replace”

Cole, the former Chelsea and England winger, did not downplay the scale of City’s problem when speaking to Paddy Power. He made it clear that Rodri’s departure is not just another high-profile exit – it’s the loss of a player he ranks among the very best the Premier League has seen.

“What a man to try and replace,” Cole said. “Rodri is one of the all-time Premier League greats. Such a unique footballer.”

Rodri didn’t just anchor City’s midfield; he dictated it. He became the tactical heartbeat of a side that dominated English football, controlling games almost on his own with his reading of play, positioning and physical presence. Replacing that kind of influence is the nightmare scenario for any recruitment department.

Cole knows it. City know it. The market knows it.

Enzo at the centre of a saga

That’s why Fernandez, still only in the early years of his European career, has been pushed to the centre of the conversation. The Argentine has been heavily linked with a move to City, and Cole believes the ingredients are there for him to thrive under the pressure.

“This Enzo saga will definitely drag on, because what you’ve got is a player who wants to move on and is wanted by multiple clubs,” Cole said. “Both parties have put a marker down, so it seems to me it’s just about money now.”

The tug-of-war is financial. The demand is clear. The interest is real. And history suggests City rarely walk away from a player they truly want.

“Manchester City tend to find money from somewhere, don’t they?” Cole added. “Wherever they find it from, that’s down to the FA and everyone else to figure out!”

Behind the quip sits a serious point: if City decide Fernandez is the man, they usually get their man.

One Rodri, two players?

Cole is convinced of Fernandez’s quality and suitability for Guardiola’s system, but he stopped short of claiming the Argentine alone can replicate Rodri’s all-encompassing influence.

“But they tend to get their man, and he’s a great player,” he said. “I think he’s perfect for the job.”

Then came the caveat.

“Replacing Rodri, you need two players to do that, even two top quality players like [Elliot] Anderson and Fernandez. I personally believe that deal will get done.”

That is the crux of City’s dilemma. Rodri combined tactical intelligence, physical dominance and calm authority in a way that allowed him to control matches almost single-handedly. To recreate that balance, Cole argues, might take a blend of profiles rather than a single marquee signing.

So City push on. Fernandez waits. The saga rolls. And somewhere between the money, the negotiations and the pressure of replacing a modern great, a new midfield axis at the Etihad is about to be built.
