Saudi Roshn League Fixture Changes for Gulf Cup Priority
The Saudi Roshn League is braced for a significant reshuffle, with the national team’s push for Arabian Gulf Cup glory set to take precedence over domestic action.
Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and that tournament window is already forcing administrators back to the calendar.
According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, the league’s organizing body is preparing a series of changes to its fixture list after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis.
The Greek manager has asked for the national team’s training camp to be extended by an extra seven days before the start of the tournament. That longer preparation period leaves little room for business as usual in the Roshn League and is expected to trigger sweeping alterations.
Several rounds are likely to be hit. The most eye-catching is the eighth round, currently scheduled for 17 September — less than a week before “Gulf 27” kicks off.
That round is now widely expected to be postponed. On the line: a high-voltage clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena, one of the marquee fixtures of the early season and a major draw for fans and broadcasters alike.
The trade-off is clear. Donis wants maximum time with his squad as he chases a long-awaited return to regional supremacy. Saudi Arabia have not lifted the Arabian Gulf Cup since 2003, a 23-year drought that hangs over every new campaign.
The national team’s recent history adds extra urgency. Donis took charge before the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but Saudi Arabia exited at the group stage, finishing bottom of Group H with just two points.
Now the calendar is being bent around his plans. The question is simple: will the disruption to the Roshn League be a price worth paying if Saudi Arabia finally get their hands back on the Gulf crown in Jeddah?
