Fernandez revealed how he once feared missing the chance to play alongside Messi, especially recalling Messi’s brief retirement in 2016. He wrote that as a boy, he would calculate the age gap between them, wondering if they would ever share the pitch for Argentina.

"It may sound silly, but I truly did it," Fernandez admitted. "I thought about how many years you might have left and how long it would take me to reach the first team. I dreamed we would wear the Argentina shirt together, even just once... and luckily you came back."

That dream turned into something far greater during the Qatar World Cup. Fernandez described sharing training sessions, dressing rooms, conversations, embraces, challenging times, joyful moments, and ultimately winning the World Cup side by side.

Fernandez praised Messi’s humility and leadership. "I will always be thankful for how you treated me from the moment I arrived," he said. "I came carrying the dream of playing with my role model but found someone who made me feel like part of the team instantly. You always had kind words, advice, an embrace, or simply the calm you gave me when I needed it. I will never forget that."

Looking ahead, Fernandez admitted it will be tough to picture future camps without Messi. "It’s hard to imagine walking out on the pitch and not seeing you in front of me wearing the number 10 shirt. We've seen you there for so many years; it feels impossible any other way."

He concluded: "How lucky I was, Leo, and how lucky that boy was who used to count the years hoping he’d arrive in time. Thank you for treating me so well, teaching me so much, and letting me be part of your story. We will miss you greatly, captain."
