Emegha Shines as Chelsea Beats Bromley 3-0 in Friendly

Jamie Gittens kept his name on the teamsheet and Emmanuel Emegha kept finding the net as Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea eased to a 3-0 win over Bromley in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Cobham on Thursday.

It was another quiet afternoon on the outside. Inside, it felt anything but.

Emegha, the summer arrival from BlueCo sister club Strasbourg, scored again, Joao Pedro joined him, and Gittens continued his sharp pre-season form as Alonso made it two wins from two to open his reign, backing up last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Crawley. The scoreline was routine; the subplots were not.

Emegha impresses, then suffers a setback

For Emegha, this pre-season was always going to be an audition. Joao Pedro is the undisputed first-choice striker, the man Alonso is building around. Anyone else in that role has to make noise quickly.

Emegha has done exactly that. Goals in back-to-back games, sharp movement, a presence in the box. The 21-year-old arrived with a serious résumé from Ligue 1: 26 goals in 65 appearances for Strasbourg and the captain’s armband handed to him last July. By September, it was announced he would eventually join Chelsea ahead of the 2026/27 season. The timeline accelerated; his impact has, too.

Then came the sting. During the win over Bromley, he reportedly picked up a hamstring problem. The knock was enough to see him left out of Chelsea’s initial 27-man squad flying to Australia on Friday, a frustrating pause just as he was building momentum.

He was not alone. Fellow new signing Geovany Quenda was also omitted, understood to be dealing with a minor issue that is not considered serious. For Alonso, it is an early reminder of how quickly pre-season plans can twist.

Gittens forces the issue out wide

Out wide, the picture is just as crowded, just as ruthless.

Gittens, whose debut season at Stamford Bridge was wrecked by injuries and stop-start form, has seized this window. Another goal, more minutes, and a sharper edge in the final third. With every run and every finish, he is nudging his way back into the conversation at a time when competition on the flanks is intensifying.

The stakes are clear. Chelsea’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen teenager Kerim Alajbegovic has cast a shadow over the futures of both Gittens and Pedro Neto. Standard Sport understands that if Chelsea move to formalise their interest in the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, they would have to consider selling Neto or allowing Gittens to leave, most likely on loan.

Gittens is doing everything he can to complicate that decision. His fast start to pre-season is a pointed reminder of his ability in the final third, the sort of form that makes a club think twice before cashing in or sending a player away to develop elsewhere.

Neto, meanwhile, sits in a different position. Chelsea are not actively looking to sell the Portugal winger and have no immediate plans to move him on, but it is understood they would listen to serious offers. For now, like several others, he is on a break after his World Cup exertions, his situation parked but far from resolved.

Alonso’s early imprint

Alonso has wasted no time imposing a structure and a standard. Two games, two wins, goals shared around, teenagers trusted. Landon Emenalo, Reggie Walsh and Reggie Watson were among the youngsters handed minutes against Bromley, as Chelsea wrapped up their work at Cobham before heading to Australia to open their pre-season tour.

The message is clear: perform, and there is a pathway. Drift, and you are expendable.

Gittens has heard it. Emegha has answered it, even as injury checks now interrupt his stride. Neto will face it when he returns. With Rogers on an extended break after the World Cup with England and new faces circling, every training session and every low-key friendly carries weight.

The scoreline against Bromley will be forgotten quickly. The battles it has sharpened for places in Alonso’s first real Chelsea squad will not.
