Eichhorn Transfer Battle: Manchester City’s Long-Term Plan

The battle for one of Germany’s brightest teenagers is intensifying, but the club closest to landing him don’t actually plan to keep him.

Eichhorn is expected to join Manchester City, yet the Premier League champions see him as a long-term project rather than an immediate squad option. The idea is clear: sign him, then send him straight back out. A loan is lined up as soon as the ink is dry, with Bayer 04 Leverkusen emerging as a serious option for his first taste of senior football at the highest level.

A move to Leverkusen would drop the 16-year-old into the Bundesliga fast lane, though not into the arms of the two German giants who have been tracking him for months. Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are both still in the race, both still convinced they can tempt him away in the next transfer window.

Dortmund's Interest

Dortmund, especially, refuse to believe the door has closed. Reports in Bild describe the Black and Yellows as having “the best chance” of securing his signature, with a face-to-face meeting between sporting director Ole Book and the player viewed as a key turning point. BVB see a pathway, a project, a midfield built around a teenager who already looks a level above his age group.

But the story is not that straightforward. Sport Bild reports that Eichhorn is not fully sold on Dortmund’s current style under Niko Kovac. The football, for now, doesn’t quite fit the picture he has in his head. Instead, the youngster is said to lean more towards the models at Bayer Leverkusen or RB Leipzig – clubs that have built reputations on high-intensity, front-foot football and on giving fearless minutes to young talent.

Bayern's Position

Bayern, usually ruthless when a German prodigy hits the market, are not fully aligned this time. According to kicker, there is internal disagreement in Munich over whether to move for the 21-year-old, despite broad admiration for his qualities. The talent is not in question. The timing, the fit, and the squad dynamics clearly are.

Hertha's Strategy

Back in Berlin, Hertha BSC are trying to hold their nerve. They know the market is circling, they know the numbers being discussed, but they have not completely given up on keeping Eichhorn in their colours a little longer. As Bild reports, the plan on the table is pragmatic: activate a €12 million release clause next summer, sell him, then immediately bring him back on loan for another season in the capital.

So the picture is layered. Manchester City ready to buy and loan. Leverkusen positioned as a launchpad. Dortmund pushing the personal touch. Leipzig lurking as a stylistic fit. Bayern arguing among themselves. Hertha fighting to delay the inevitable.

For a 16-year-old defensive midfielder, that is a lot of noise. The next window will show who he trusts with the first real step of his career – and which club is brave enough to build around him, not just buy him.
