Egypt Demands World Cup Referees Be Expelled After Defeat to Argentina

The anger in Cairo has not cooled since the final whistle in Atlanta. It has hardened.

The Egyptian Football Association has lodged a formal complaint with Fifa and called for the match officials from their World Cup last-16 defeat by Argentina to be thrown out of the tournament, accusing them of “double standards” and “blatant errors” that they say helped dump Egypt out of the competition.

At the heart of the fury lies a second-half flashpoint. Egypt were 1-0 up, the reigning champions rocking, when Mostafa Zico thought he had doubled the lead. The celebrations did not last. VAR intervened, French referee Francois Letexier was sent to the monitor, and the goal was ruled out after Egypt midfielder Marwan Attia was judged to have stepped on Lisandro Martinez’s foot at the start of the move.

For Egypt, that was the moment the night turned.

Minutes later, the match unravelled in a blur of pressure, controversy and, ultimately, Lionel Messi.

‘Serious refereeing mistakes’ and ‘crime of discrimination’

In a strongly worded statement, the EFA said its president, Hany Abou Rida, had filed an official complaint with Fifa demanding an investigation into Letexier and his team.

The federation condemned what it called “serious refereeing mistakes” and “double standards” that it believes “caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup”.

The complaint does not stop at criticism. Egypt have “demanded the exclusion of the referee and the entire crew from the World Cup after investigating these mistakes” and even alleged “the crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team”.

They argue that VAR and the video officials not only made key errors, but also “insisted on not reviewing some of the footage” that, in their view, might have changed the outcome of the game.

The most bitter grievance came at the death. With the score level at 2-2 deep into stoppage time, Egypt claim Mohamed Salah was fouled inside the Argentina penalty area. No penalty. No review. Seconds later, Argentina broke away and scored the winner in a 3-2 comeback that kept the holders alive and sent Egypt home.

Messi turns the tide

Until the closing stages, Egypt stood on the brink of history. They have never reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup, and for long spells they had the world champions on the ropes.

Then Messi took over.

The Argentina captain, potentially playing in his final World Cup, created their first goal in the 79th minute and then struck an 83rd-minute equaliser, dragging his side back from the edge. When the stoppage-time winner went in, Egyptian players sank to the turf, beaten not only by Argentina’s late surge but, in their eyes, by the officials as well.

‘Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay’

Head coach Hossam Hassan did not hide his frustration.

After the match, he said Egypt had been “treated unfairly” and had “suffered injustice”. Then he went further.

“Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running,” he said, laying bare the suspicion and resentment swirling around the Egyptian camp.

Zico echoed his manager’s anger, describing the officiating as “really unfair”.

“The injustice was clear. There’s been an unfairness right from the start of the match,” he said. “It is clear that this tournament has been fixed.”

Those are explosive words, and they now sit on Fifa’s desk alongside Egypt’s formal complaint. Fifa has been contacted for comment.

Argentina march on, Egypt left to stew

While Egypt rage against the referees and pick through the debris of a shattered campaign, Argentina move on. They face Switzerland in Kansas City in the early hours of Sunday (02:00 BST), still on course to defend their crown, still powered by Messi’s enduring brilliance.

Egypt, meanwhile, are left with a familiar World Cup story: promise, heartbreak, and an exit before the quarter-finals. This time, they insist, it was not just about football.
