Ederson’s World Cup Call Delays Manchester United Move

Manchester United’s first major signing of the Michael Carrick era is on track – just not quite on schedule.

Ederson, the Atalanta midfielder earmarked as the cornerstone of United’s new-look engine room, has been called up late to Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, a twist that is set to nudge back the final stages of his move to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old was initially left out of the Selecao squad, only to be drafted in after an injury to Roma right-back Wesley opened up a spot. Brazil have turned to a player in form and in demand, and United must now wait their turn.

The deal itself is in place. United have agreed an initial £35 million fee with Atalanta for the defensive midfielder, who is poised to become Carrick’s first signing as permanent manager. The club identified Ederson as a key target after Casemiro’s departure, with the Brazilian viewed as a long-term anchor at the base of midfield rather than a short-term patch.

Ederson has three caps for Brazil, but none since 2025. That changes now. He will link up with the national team in North America for the World Cup, turning a summer of negotiations into a summer on the game’s biggest stage.

For United, the timing cuts both ways. The club want the transfer wrapped up as soon as possible, and are pushing to finalise the move imminently. Yet any hope of Carrick working with his new signing from day one of pre-season has faded. Ederson will not report to his new club until after Brazil’s World Cup campaign ends, trimming down the window for adaptation before the new season.

His arrival will swell United’s World Cup contingent even further. The club already have 12 players at the tournament; once Ederson’s signing is confirmed, that number climbs to 13 – a clear sign of the international weight still carried by the squad, even in a period of transition.

For Carrick, the equation is simple. He may have to wait a little longer to get Ederson on the training pitch. If Brazil go deep into the tournament, that wait stretches further.

But if United’s new midfielder returns from North America sharper, battle-tested, and with his international career reignited, the delay could prove a small price to pay for the first building block of a new midfield.
