Christophe Dugarry Criticizes Kylian Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or Ambitions as Selfish

Former French international Christophe Dugarry has harshly criticized Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid forward, over his recent public statements about aiming to win the Ballon d’Or. The 1998 World Cup winner sees Mbappe’s open pursuit of personal awards as immature and damaging to his leadership role with both club and country.

Direct Criticism from Dugarry

Dugarry has not held back in expressing his disappointment with Mbappe’s attitude. He argues that focusing on personal statistics rather than team success reflects poorly on a player of Mbappe’s caliber. The former striker described the public campaigning for such an award as beneath someone who leads the French national team.

“To publicly ask for an individual award like that, I find it CHILDISH and PATHETIC. There’s nothing great about asking for it, especially as captain of your national team,” said Dugarry.

The criticism follows Mbappe’s recent comments where he expressed confidence about winning the Ballon d’Or. Speaking about his chances, the 27-year-old highlighted that playing for Real Madrid, widely regarded as the top club globally, naturally places him among the frontrunners for such honors.

“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappe remarked. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”

Although Mbappe scored an impressive 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last season, his time at Paris Saint-Germain without a Champions League title continues to draw criticism. Dugarry views the focus on Mbappe’s individual achievements as a sign of a broader issue in modern football, where the collective effort is often overshadowed by star power.

He added: “Football is becoming more and more individualistic, and far too often it makes me sick. Instead of talking about yourself and individual awards, you should be talking about the team, about sharing success and about the trophies you didn’t win but wanted to win together.”
