Djed Spence has made up his mind. If he moves this summer, he wants Liverpool.

The England international, fresh from an impressive World Cup and one of Tottenham’s standout performers last season, has emerged as a serious option for Andoni Iraola as Liverpool scramble to reinforce a defence stretched to its limits.

Liverpool’s defensive puzzle

Liverpool’s summer so far has been controlled rather than chaotic. Two signings in Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet hint at a long-term plan, but the immediate picture at the back is far less tidy.

Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez are all currently unavailable for various reasons. Full-back depth is thin. Centre-back cover looks fragile. For a side with ambitions on multiple fronts, that is a problem that cannot be ignored.

The club are already chasing attacking reinforcements, with PSG duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye on the radar as the search for at least one new winger continues. Yet the growing sense inside Anfield is clear: without a new full-back and another centre-back, this window will feel incomplete.

That is where Spence enters the frame.

According to Anfield Sector, Liverpool’s interest in the Tottenham defender is real, and the player’s stance is even more striking. Spence is described as “extremely receptive” to the idea of joining Liverpool this summer.

The report underlines Iraola’s concern with his current right-back options and frames Spence as one of several names being assessed rather than a done deal. The interest is there, even if those close to the situation insist it is being downplayed for now.

The attraction is obvious. Spence has built a strong platform for a move. He has handled the pressure of international football with England and produced consistent performances for Spurs in a campaign where not many could say the same.

Yet his path at Tottenham is blocked. With Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson expected to be preferred in the full-back roles next season, Spurs are prepared to listen under the right conditions.

Those conditions will not be cheap.

Spurs set the price – and the debate

Tottenham reporter @szyexcl has stated that the north London club want at least £35m for Spence, with Liverpool’s interest acknowledged and the player “very open” to a move if a formal offer lands.

That figure alone would make Spence a significant investment for a full-back, but not everyone around the game believes it reflects his true value.

Former Premier League scout Bryan King went even further last month, arguing that Tottenham would be “stupid” to consider anything below £50m. In his view, Spence’s status as a young, current England international demands a premium. £25m? Not even a conversation. Under £50m? Not worth picking up the phone.

Tottenham, then, stand at a crossroads: hold firm for top dollar or cash in at a level closer to the current market reality.

Liverpool, for their part, must decide how far they are willing to go for a player who fits a clear need but comes with a heavy price tag attached.

A defender keen to come. A club under pressure to buy. Another reluctant to sell cheap.
