Derby Young Guns Shine in Pre-Season Victory Over Mansfield

Derby’s young guns stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight, as a largely second-string side saw off Mansfield Town 3-1 in a lively pre-season workout.

With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for Burton Albion duty tomorrow, this was a night for the understudies. They didn’t waste it.

Derby struck first. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen peeled wide, measured his cross and whipped in the kind of delivery every striker wants. Dajaune Brown did the rest, timing his run and finishing with conviction to give John Eustace’s makeshift XI an early edge.

Mansfield, though, were never here to make up the numbers. They carried a threat whenever they broke forward and found their equaliser through a familiar subplot. Michael Smith, once on Derby’s radar, escaped down the right, checked inside, and with a sharp chop onto his left foot bent a precise effort beyond the reach of Josh Vickers. The Derby keeper was at full stretch and beaten.

Vickers quickly atoned. David McGoldrick, still every inch the technician Derby fans remember, drifted into space and let fly. Vickers read it, sprang to his right and produced a superb stop to keep the scores level before the interval.

The game opened up after the break. Smith almost turned it on its head, thundering a strike against the bar from a corner as Mansfield pressed for a second. That near-miss jolted Derby back into life. From midfield, Owen Eames surged through the centre, driving past challenges and sliding in Salvesen, only for the forward to fire straight at goalkeeper Christy Pym’s replacement, Lewis.

Suddenly, chances arrived in waves. McGoldrick tried again from distance, forcing Vickers into another full-length save. The contest felt stretched, vulnerable to a moment of quality.

Derby found it through Charlie Smith. Picking up the ball 20 yards out, he took a touch, opened his body and guided a crisp, low strike into the bottom corner. No fuss, no backlift drama, just clean technique and a finish that swung the evening back Derby’s way.

The pressure finally told on Mansfield’s tiring legs. With space now appearing between the lines, Corey Blackett-Taylor drove at the defence, committing bodies and slipping the ball into Cruz Allen. The youngster stayed calm, picked his spot and steered his finish past Harris to make it 3-1 and put the game out of reach.

By the final whistle, it wasn’t just a pre-season scoreline that mattered. It was the sight of academy faces and fringe players delivering in grown-up moments, taking responsibility, and deciding a contest that had threatened to tilt away from them.

For Eustace, that may prove more valuable than any routine summer run-out.
