Declan Rice Isolates Ahead of Norway Clash
Declan Rice has been separated from the rest of the England squad after falling ill on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with FA staff moving quickly to stop a minor concern turning into a full-blown crisis.
The Arsenal midfielder, already managing hamstring and lower-back problems carried over from a gruelling season at the Emirates Stadium, has now been hit by a bug that has ruled him out of training for two consecutive days. Medical staff have taken no chances, keeping him away from the main group as England fine-tune preparations for Saturday’s knockout tie.
For Gareth Southgate and his staff, the timing is awkward. Rice is a central pillar of England’s structure, the anchor who shields the back line and knits together defence and attack. Losing him, even temporarily, changes the feel of the side. Yet inside the camp there is quiet confidence that the illness has been contained and that the wider squad remains unaffected.
Whether Rice recovers in time to face Norway remains uncertain. His availability now hangs over the quarter-final like a tactical question mark. If he does not make it, England lose not only a leader in midfield but also one of their most durable competitors, a player who last season pushed through the pain barrier to keep Arsenal’s title push alive.
The situation also ripples back to North London. Rice was already due to return late for Arsenal’s pre-season because of his World Cup involvement, and his current issues only sharpen Mikel Arteta’s focus on his workload. Arsenal begin their summer schedule in Girona on August 1, but Rice will not be there, regardless of his recovery from this illness.
He is not alone. Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke are also set to miss the opening pre-season fixture as they take their mandated three-week break once England’s tournament ends. If Southgate’s side progress past Norway and into the semi-finals, that absence will almost certainly extend to Arsenal’s second friendly, against Real Betis in Dublin on August 5.
Arteta’s early pre-season sessions will therefore be stripped of several of his most influential figures. Norway’s Martin Odegaard, France’s William Saliba, Spain’s David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, and Belgium’s Leandro Trossard are also expected to sit out the initial phase of preparations, their own World Cup duties and subsequent holidays delaying any reunion with club teammates.
Spain face Belgium tonight with a semi-final place on the line, while France have already secured their spot in the last four after a 2-0 win over Morocco. Each result nudges Arsenal’s plans one way or another, dictating when key players will walk back through the doors at London Colney.
For now, though, all eyes are on Rice, alone in isolation as England look to keep their quarter-final plans intact and their World Cup dream on track.
