Roberto De Zerbi Criticizes Unfair Defeat as Tottenham Exit Carabao Cup to Liverpool

Roberto De Zerbi, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, expressed his frustration after his team’s 3-1 exit against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup third round. Despite creating numerous chances, Spurs couldn’t convert, while Liverpool capitalized efficiently, leading De Zerbi to describe the result as unfair.

"We have to shoot more times and we have to shoot better. We have to finish better the clear situations. But we are sorry for the result, disappointed, frustrated for the result. I think it is unfair but we have to accept it and be stronger than this unlucky moment because I am honest. Honest with myself and with you."

De Zerbi believes bad luck has been a recurring theme in recent matches, citing difficult results against Newcastle, Everton, Nottingham, and now Liverpool as examples where his team deserved better outcomes.

"I think in these five or six games we have been, for sure, not lucky, Newcastle, with Everton, even with Nottingham and tonight as well," De Zerbi said.

Defensive Errors Costly Against Liverpool

While Tottenham’s finishing was poor, De Zerbi also criticized the defensive mistakes that allowed Liverpool to control the match. He pointed out moments during transitions when his team lost structure, enabling Liverpool’s midfield and attack to exploit gaps.

"We have to improve a lot of things because the first goal we conceded, we didn’t defend in the right way and the second goal we could be closer with Gakpo," the Spurs manager added.

Looking Forward to Recovery

With the Carabao Cup no longer an option, the focus shifts entirely to improving league form. The combination of missed chances and defensive lapses has placed pressure on De Zerbi and his squad to find consistency. The Italian remains confident in his players' quality but stresses the need for mental resilience to overcome this tough period.

"It is a tough moment but we have to be stronger to prepare our best for the next game," De Zerbi stated.
