De Zerbi Promises Another Bomba as Spurs Continue Rebuild

Tottenham’s summer of excess is not done yet. Not if Roberto De Zerbi has anything to do with it.

The Spurs head coach, already backed with record-breaking money, insists there is still “another bomba” to come in a transfer window that has turned Tottenham into one of Europe’s loudest operators.

“The transfer market, it’s not finished for sure,” De Zerbi said, speaking to The Athletic. “We have completed 60% of our project in the transfer market. Now we have another bomba.”

In the modern transfer lexicon, “bomba” has become the supporters’ word of choice for a sudden, explosive deal. A bolt from the blue. De Zerbi knows exactly what he is teasing.

Record fees, ruthless intent

Tottenham have not just dipped into the market; they have dived in headfirst.

They have already smashed their transfer record twice in the same window. First came Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million ($113.7m). Then Spurs went even higher for Sandro Tonali, prising him from Newcastle in a package that could climb to £100m ($133.8m).

Those two deals alone announce a new financial reality at the club. But the churn has gone deeper than headline fees.

Jan Paul van Hecke has been recruited from Brighton to bolster the back line, while Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have arrived on free transfers, smart additions that add experience and depth without further straining the budget. Spurs have also been linked with Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City, another sign that the club are scanning the market aggressively in wide areas.

This is not tinkering. It is a rebuild with teeth.

“Like a shark”: De Zerbi’s transfer obsession

If the money shows ambition from the board, the language shows intent from the coach.

“In the transfer market, when I want one player, I become like a shark,” De Zerbi said. “No chance to say no.

“I love working in the transfer market. It’s not pressure, it’s one of the nicest parts of my work, my job.”

It is a revealing image. De Zerbi does not see recruitment as a chore or a distraction from the training pitch. He revels in it. The hunt, the chase, the persuasion – all of it.

Asked whether this mysterious “bomba” is close, he stayed on the front foot without overpromising. “I hope, but it’s not finished, for sure,” he replied, hinting at advanced work but refusing to declare the deal done.

A project 60% complete – and the biggest twist still to come?

By De Zerbi’s own calculation, Spurs are only a little over halfway through their transfer blueprint. Sixty per cent done, forty per cent still to be written.

The early chapters have already changed the face of the squad: record-breaking midfield signings, defensive reinforcements, the prospect of fresh attacking flair if a move for Savinho materialises.

The question now is simple and tantalising: if Fernandes and Tonali were just the build-up, what does “another bomba” look like in this new Tottenham era?
