Darwin Núñez's Future: Besiktas or MLS?
Darwin Núñez’s Saudi detour looks set to last just one season. The Uruguayan, once tipped to dominate European nights for years, is already searching for the exit at Al-Hilal and weighing up a return to a stage that suits his temperament far better than the relative quiet of the Saudi Pro League.
The 27-year-old has reported back for pre-season after his holidays, but his mind is elsewhere. His contract runs until 2028, yet the relationship already feels like one of convenience rather than conviction. Al-Hilal paid €55 million to bring him in last summer; they are not about to let him walk away cheaply. A clean break is not on the table. A loan is.
A misfit in Riyadh
The move to Saudi Arabia was supposed to reboot Núñez’s career after an uneven spell at Liverpool. It never really caught fire. Karim Benzema’s status as the reference point in attack left Núñez playing a supporting role more often than not, and for a striker who thrives on rhythm and repetition, that lack of consistent starts has been brutal.
His 2026 FIFA World Cup did little to shift the narrative. Uruguay’s campaign passed without a defining Núñez moment, and he returned to club duty with questions swirling rather than answers.
What is clear now: he wants out.
Besiktas step forward
Into that uncertainty steps Besiktas. According to transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri, the Turkish giants are closing in on an agreement with Núñez, offering him the one thing he has been starved of: guaranteed minutes.
The terms under discussion point towards a loan until the end of the season. It suits all three parties in different ways. Besiktas get a striker with European pedigree without committing to a huge fee. Núñez gets a platform, a big club, and the pressure he seems to need. Al-Hilal protect their investment, keeping the door open for either a future sale at a more respectable price or a reintegrated player with restored value.
There is a compromise, though. The salary package in Istanbul would not match what is on offer in the United States. Núñez appears ready to sacrifice that for the football he wants.
MLS waits in the wings
MLS has not ignored the situation. Atlanta United have already lodged an offer with Al-Hilal, keen to make Núñez the latest headline arrival in the league’s ongoing push for global relevance.
From a financial standpoint, the American route is attractive. From a sporting one, less so for the player at this moment. The Uruguayan’s preference, for now, is a return to Europe, to the intensity and scrutiny he knows best. That stance keeps Besiktas in pole position.
Barcelona lurking, but at a distance
Barcelona’s name inevitably hovers around any high-profile forward on the market, and Núñez is no exception. He has been offered to the Catalan club and sits on their list of potential solutions if the primary plan collapses.
Right now, that primary plan is clear: Julian Álvarez. Deco and his recruitment team see the Atletico Madrid and Argentina striker as the ideal fit to lead the line. Atletico, though, have dug in. They do not want to sell this summer, and every conversation has underlined that stance.
So the search widens. Núñez is there as a theoretical option, a name in the folder, but not a live operation. No formal move, no negotiations advancing, no sense of urgency from Barcelona’s side.
For Núñez, that matters. His next decision cannot wait for a domino that may never fall.
A career at a crossroads
So the picture sharpens. One year after leaving Europe, Núñez stands on the edge of a return, with Besiktas ready to hand him the starting role he craves and MLS offering a lucrative alternative he is not yet ready to take.
Al-Hilal will not write off their €55 million outlay. Barcelona, for now, will not rescue him. The choice, in practical terms, is between Istanbul’s intensity and Atlanta’s promise.
