Daley Blind Returns to Ajax: A New Era Begins

Daley Blind has walked back into an Ajax dressing room he barely recognises – and he loves what he sees.

The 36-year-old defender, back at the club where his name is woven into the furniture, returned to find an Ajax side that had been through the wringer. Turbulent seasons, angry fans, a broken sense of identity. He didn’t hide from that.

"Yes, it was different from how I had left it. That’s true," he admitted after the 1-4 win over FK Vojvodina in the Conference League qualifying round.

Different, but not doomed. Far from it.

A new tone, a new wind

From the first step back inside the club, Blind sensed a shift. Not in the walls or the badges, but in the voice at the front of the room.

"The tone had already been set by the coach," he said, pointing straight at Míchel as the catalyst. A “new wind” is how Blind described it. You could hear the relief in the way he framed it: fresh energy, a lighter mood, a group that actually believes again.

"There was a new wind blowing, there was a lot of positivity in the group," he said. "And of course that still has to grow as well."

That last line matters. Ajax are not “back” on the strength of a couple of August nights. But Blind, who has seen title-winning machines and fragile sides in Amsterdam, recognises the early signs of something healthier.

Scars from difficult years

Blind didn’t gloss over the recent past. The last seasons have left marks.

"You hear that from the lads as well," he noted. "They have also been difficult years. For the fans. But also for the players themselves."

Ajax have looked fractured on and off the pitch, their usual swagger replaced by doubt. Blind went straight to the heart of what had been missing: togetherness.

"That feeling of being a team, of unity, of confidence. Of positivity that goes hand in hand with victories. I think we have been doing well with that over the last two matches as well."

Two games do not erase two years, but they can reset a mood. Back-to-back wins, goals flowing, a clearer structure under Míchel – these are the building blocks Blind is clinging to, and lending his authority to.

Conference League under control, eyes on Eredivisie

The 1-4 win away to FK Vojvodina has effectively settled the second qualifying round after just 90 minutes. The return leg in Amsterdam already feels like a formality, a rare low-stress night in a period when Ajax have had very few.

Waiting beyond that, most likely, is Shelbourne FC. The Irish side beat Nomme Kalju of Estonia 5-2 and are on course to face Ajax in the third qualifying round. It’s not a tie that should frighten a club of Ajax’s stature, but this version of Ajax knows better than to take anything for granted.

Blind, though, is already looking beyond the qualifiers. His gaze is fixed firmly on the start of the new VriendenLoterij Eredivisie season and what this reborn mood might mean when the real domestic grind begins.

"And that has to keep growing and really come alive again. I think that is moving in the right direction," he said, sounding as assured as he has in years in an Ajax shirt.

The veteran has come back to a club still piecing itself together. The difference now is that, under Míchel, Ajax finally look like a team that knows which way it wants to go.
