Crystal Palace Completes Dwight McNeil Transfer After January Collapse

Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Dwight McNeil did not just involve agents, lawyers and sporting directors. It went straight to the heart of the player’s home.

Steve Parish, the club’s co-owner and chairman, personally contacted McNeil’s partner, Megan Sharpley, before finally landing the Everton midfielder in a swap deal completed on Tuesday. It was a deliberate move to repair a relationship that had frayed badly in January.

Back then, McNeil had one foot inside Selhurst Park. A loan-to-buy agreement was in place, the 26-year-old had passed his medical, and the numbers were lined up for a permanent £20m transfer. Then the clock beat them. Paperwork was not completed in time, the window shut, and the deal collapsed at the last moment.

For McNeil, it was a brutal twist. For Sharpley, it was unacceptable.

She took to Instagram in the aftermath, delivering a pointed criticism of the way the saga had been handled and the emotional toll on her partner. Her words cut through the usual noise around transfers, focusing on the mental strain of being “dragged along on an emotional rollercoaster” and having something “torn away from you at the last second with absolutely no explanation”.

Those comments did not go unnoticed in south London. As negotiations reignited this summer, BBC Sport understands Parish reached out directly to Sharpley to smooth things over, an unusual but telling step in modern recruitment. Palace wanted the player, but they also needed to rebuild trust.

This time, they got it done.

McNeil has signed a four-year contract with Palace, with Brennan Johnson heading the other way to Everton as part of the arrangement. The move ends McNeil’s two-year spell at Goodison Park, where he arrived from Burnley for £20m in July 2022 and went on to score 15 goals in 128 appearances for the Toffees.

At Palace, he walks into a club riding the most successful period in its history. The Eagles have lifted the FA Cup, the Community Shield and the Uefa Conference League across the last two seasons, a remarkable haul for a side once defined by its battles for Premier League survival.

McNeil made it clear he wants in on that momentum.

“The lads have had some great success over the last two seasons. It’s something that I want to be a part of, so I’m really looking forward to getting started,” he said after the deal was confirmed, framing his move as a chance to join a project already in full stride rather than a rebuild from scratch.

Parish, for his part, was equally clear about why Palace pushed so hard, twice, to bring him to Selhurst Park, describing McNeil as “a player with proven ability in the Premier League”. The numbers back that up: seasons of steady output at Burnley, followed by a significant role at Everton in difficult circumstances.

Johnson’s departure in the opposite direction closes a short and frustrating chapter. Signed by Palace for £35m in January, he never caught fire in south London, failing to score in 26 appearances in all competitions. Talent was never the question; timing, confidence and fit were. Everton now take on the task of unlocking the forward Palace could not quite find.

For Palace, the swap feels like a reset in attack. A wide player with McNeil’s work-rate, delivery and experience gives them a different profile on the flank, and a footballer who has already lived through the harsher side of the transfer market arrives with something to prove.

The January collapse might have broken this move for good. Instead, a phone call, a repaired relationship and a second chance have delivered a midfielder stepping into a dressing room full of medals and momentum.

Now McNeil has to show why Parish went back for him, and why this time, nothing was left to the last minute.
