Cristian Chivu on John Stones: A Key Addition for Inter's Ambitions

Cristian Chivu did not bother to hide his satisfaction. Sitting in front of the cameras at his pre-match press conference, the Inter coach spoke like a man who knows he has just been handed a cornerstone for his project.

John Stones, the England defender prised away from Manchester City, has barely arrived and already feels central to Chivu’s plans.

“I’m happy with his arrival; he is important to us for many reasons – for his quality, his personality, and his charisma. He raises the level of our defence,” Chivu said, laying out in a few words exactly why Inter pushed so hard to get the deal done.

Stones as a standard-setter

This is not just another signing to pad out the squad. Chivu sees Stones as a reference point, a player who can drag the entire defensive unit up a notch and align Inter with the standards the club demands.

Right now, the group is incomplete. Several players are still returning from post-World Cup holidays, and pre-season fitness is far from optimal. Chivu knows it, and he is not pretending otherwise.

“Right now, we’re enjoying who we have here, waiting for those returning from post-World Cup holidays, and then we still have a month left in the transfer window. The squad is competitive, but you always need key players who can make you take that quality leap and allow you to stay aligned with this club’s ambitions.”

That “quality leap” phrase is not accidental. Inter have been strong domestically in recent years, but the bar inside the club is set by European nights and deep runs in major competitions. Stones, with his experience at the very top, fits that profile perfectly.

A test against Maresca and a nod to the market

The first big examination for this new-look Inter comes against Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City. It is only a test, a pre-season date on the calendar, but Chivu treats it as a measuring stick.

“It’s special to face a great team like City. Obviously, we’re not at 100% physically, but we’ll do our best,” he said.

The coach circled back to the state of his squad and the club’s transfer strategy, again placing Stones at the centre of that conversation.

“Patience is needed, the market is still long. We are all good at understanding what’s missing right now, especially regarding squad depth.”

He has been consistent since taking the job: he wants players who do more than just fill a role. He wants signings that change the internal temperature of the dressing room.

“I have always asked to raise the bar and bring in important players who want to be part of this wonderful group. We are paying attention to opportunities to raise the level that these lads have maintained for many years.”

That is the challenge now. Inter already have a core that has carried the club through demanding seasons and high-pressure matches. Stones joins that core to push it higher, while the recruitment team scours the market for the right-wing upgrade that can complete the picture.
