Coventry City Break Transfer Record for Carl Rushworth

Coventry City have turned last season’s loan fairytale into a permanent fixture, smashing their transfer record to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 25-year-old, who was ever-present in the Championship as Coventry stormed to the title, has committed to what the club describe as a long-term deal. The fee has not been disclosed, but it is widely reported to be around £22m – the highest in Coventry’s history.

Rushworth started all 46 league games last season, a constant in a campaign of rising expectation and mounting pressure. He kept 17 clean sheets, anchoring a side that ended a 25-year exile from the Premier League and turned the CBS Arena into a fortress.

"I'm really happy, there's so many emotions that I've got," Rushworth said after the deal was completed. "There's excitement, I can finally relax knowing it's done and that I'm back with the boys and at a club I loved being at."

For Rushworth, the move closes a long, wandering chapter. He never made a senior appearance for Brighton after joining from hometown club Halifax Town in 2019, instead living the life of the modern goalkeeping nomad. Six different loan spells in seven years, constant packing and unpacking, always proving himself somewhere new.

Frank Lampard, who built his promotion-winning side around Rushworth’s calm presence and sharp reflexes, made no secret of his desire to keep him. Now he has his man.

"It's great to have Carl back with us on a permanent basis," the Coventry manager said. "He's a top professional, a great character and he had a huge impact on the team to help us get promoted last season."

The size of the investment underlines how dramatically Rushworth’s status has shifted. From Brighton reserve to record signing, from serial loanee to Premier League No 1 in waiting.

Coventry’s return to the top flight will test every department of Lampard’s squad. They will need new faces, deeper quality, more experience. But they already know who will be standing between the posts when that first Premier League whistle blows.
