Colombia Secures Last-16 Spot with Narrow Win Over Ghana

Colombia did just enough. Ghana never really did at all.

At Arrowhead Stadium on Friday, a wasteful but largely untroubled Colombia side beat a blunt Ghana 1-0 to claim the final ticket to the World Cup last 16, a place that always looked theirs once Jhon Arias struck early.

The scoreline flattered Ghana. The pattern of the match did not.

A bright start from the Africans hinted at a contest that never truly arrived. Inside the opening minute, Thomas Partey stepped onto a loose ball and whipped a fierce effort just wide, a shot that briefly jolted the stadium and suggested Colombia might be in for a fight.

It was a false alarm.

From that moment, Colombia took control of the ball, the tempo and, soon enough, the lead. Arias, sharp and alive to space, provided the breakthrough, turning Colombia’s early dominance into something tangible and settling any nerves about their knockout fate. The goal gave the South Americans a cushion; it also exposed Ghana’s lack of cutting edge.

Colombia’s evening was not without concern. Jhon Cordoba pulled up early with what appeared to be a groin injury, his night ending far sooner than planned as Luis Suarez came on in his place. The change did little to alter the flow. Colombia kept probing, kept circulating the ball, kept Ghana pinned back.

On the opposite side, misfortune struck just as quickly. Marvin Senaya went down and could not continue, forcing Ghana into an early reshuffle as Alidu Seidu entered the fray. The substitution added fresh legs but not fresh ideas. Ghana’s attacks remained sporadic, their threat more theoretical than real.

Colombia, for all their dominance, failed to turn control into a comfortable margin. Chances came and went, the final ball often lacking, the finish too often missing. The longer it stayed 1-0, the more it invited tension that the performance scarcely warranted.

Yet Ghana never truly seized that invitation. After Partey’s early sighter, they rarely troubled Colombia, struggling to stitch together meaningful moves or ask sustained questions of the South American defence. The match drifted toward its conclusion with Colombia in charge and Ghana chasing shadows.

The whistle confirmed what the game had been saying for most of the night: Colombia through, Ghana out. Wasteful, yes. But still standing, still alive, and now heading to Vancouver for a last-16 meeting with Switzerland that will demand sharper finishing than this narrow win ever required.
