Colo Colo Signs World Cup Star Vozinha

Colo Colo are moving for one of the World Cup’s most unexpected stars. Not a precocious wonderkid. A 40-year-old goalkeeper whose story has already travelled the world.

Vozinha, the veteran Cape Verde No 1 who lit up the tournament with a string of defiant performances, is set to join the Chilean giants, the club confirmed.

“Vozinha is set to become a Colo Colo player; he will arrive in Chile in the coming days, undergo the necessary medical tests and will then be presented here at the Monumental Stadium,” club president Anibal Mosa told reporters before a league game on Friday night.

The deal brings one of the World Cup’s most memorable figures to one of South America’s most demanding stages. Colo Colo, 34-time champions of Chile and comfortably clear at the top midway through the season, are not signing a mascot. They are signing a goalkeeper who just finished standing up to the best in the world.

From Fairytale to Monumental

Cape Verde’s run captured imaginations far beyond Africa, and Vozinha sat at the heart of it. He shut out eventual champions Spain in a gritty 0-0 draw in the group stage, throwing himself in front of shots, crosses and expectations. Then came Argentina in the knockouts: a wild 3-2 defeat after extra time in which the underdogs refused to bow and their keeper refused to wilt.

Those nights turned him from a respected professional into a global cult figure.

His full name is Josimar Jose Evora Dias, and his career has never followed the traditional script. He did not sign his first professional contract until he was 26. While others were already established in Europe’s major leagues, he was still climbing from obscurity, taking the long way round through Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova and Angola.

Most recently he has been at Chaves in Portugal’s second division. Now, after the World Cup, his path bends again — this time towards Santiago and the Estadio Monumental.

“He’s in very good form; that’s why we’re signing him,” Mosa said, cutting through any notion that this is just a romantic gesture.

A Goalkeeper and a Global Brand

On the pitch, Vozinha’s reflexes and presence have carried him this far. Off it, something else has happened. He has become a phenomenon.

Helped by Brazilian influencer Casimiro, the Cape Verdean’s profile exploded during the tournament. His Instagram following rocketed from around 50,000 to nearly 30 million, a staggering leap that places him among the most visible footballers on the planet almost overnight.

For Colo Colo, the signing brings more than experience between the posts. It brings a global spotlight to a club already dominant at home, a rare blend of sporting logic and marketing gold.
