Cole Palmer's Future: Will He Join Manchester United?

Cole Palmer’s Manchester roots have never been a secret. He grew up in the blue half of the city, spent 13 years at Manchester City, and yet has always been open about one thing: he’s a Manchester United fan.

That tension between past and passion is now fuelling a transfer storyline that refuses to die down.

Gallas predicts Old Trafford in Palmer’s future

William Gallas, never shy of a strong opinion, is convinced the path is already laid out. In his view, Palmer to Manchester United is not a question of if, but when.

“I don’t think Cole Palmer will go right now. I don’t think it’s time to go right now,” the former Chelsea and France defender told iPredicta. “He will definitely go to Manchester United in the future if he’s a big fan, if he’s got a dream to play for Man United, he will definitely go there, but right now I don’t think so. “I think he needs to have one more big season as he did two years ago, before he got his injury problem, then he might move.”

That’s the crux of Gallas’ argument: one more standout campaign at Stamford Bridge, then the door to Old Trafford swings open.

Palmer only arrived at Chelsea in 2023, a £42.5m signing from City, and rapidly became the centrepiece of their attack. His form ignited talk that United, aware of his boyhood allegiance and his Manchester upbringing, would try to prise him away. Rumours of homesickness surfaced, the narrative practically writing itself.

Palmer shut that down. He denied being homesick and dismissed suggestions that a move to United was in motion. Still, the speculation lingers, and Gallas has poured more fuel on it.

A message from Manchester

While Palmer stays put in west London for now, another Chelsea midfielder has already made the jump to United.

Andrey Santos has signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with United paying an initial £48m plus £2m in add-ons. The Brazilian wanted regular football, something he never truly found at Stamford Bridge, and chose United as the place to chase it.

His first days as a United player came with a familiar name in his inbox.

“I’m so excited to be here,” Santos said. “So pleased. I got a message from Cole [Palmer], he sent a message because he was born here [Manchester], so he knows everything here. “He said all the best for you, for your career, you deserve this, a lot of things. So I'm so excited to be here in Manchester with my new teammates.”

No grand hint. No coded message. Just one Manchester-born footballer wishing another well as he settles into the city Palmer once called home.

Still, the image is striking: Palmer, the lifelong United fan playing for Chelsea, texting good-luck messages to a former teammate who has just signed for United. Gallas sees a pattern. Others will, too.

For now, Palmer remains Chelsea’s talisman and United’s hypothetical future. If he delivers the “one more big season” Gallas demands, the noise around his next move will only grow louder.
