Chelsea's Summer Transfers: Major Departures and Future Plans

Chelsea’s summer window has a clear theme already: the door out of Stamford Bridge is spinning faster than the one in.

The latest, and by far the most eye-catching, departure is Andrey Santos. The Brazilian midfielder is on the brink of a £50million move to Manchester United, a deal that is agreed in full and only awaiting official confirmation. He is set to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford, ending his Chelsea stint after asking to leave.

United have struck a package worth £50m with the Blues, built around a £48m up-front payment and a further £2m in add-ons. Once the paperwork lands, Santos will become Chelsea’s third significant sale of the summer and the headline act in a window defined by exits in west London.

Those exits are already stacking up on the balance sheet. With Santos, Tyrique George and Marc Cucurella all gone, Chelsea will have generated around £126m in sales so far.

Tyrique George

George has swapped Cobham for Merseyside, joining Everton permanently after a loan spell at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the second half of last season. Chelsea bank £18m immediately from the Toffees, with another £6m potentially due if performance-related clauses are triggered during his time at Goodison Park.

Marc Cucurella

Cucurella’s move is of a different profile but the same message. The Spain international is now a Real Madrid player after the clubs agreed a €55m (£47.4m fixed) plus €5m (£4.3m) deal. His four-year stay at Stamford Bridge ends with a sizeable fee and a vacancy at left-back that Chelsea are already trying to fill.

Targeting Pep Chavarría

The plan there is clear: Pep Chavarría is the target. Direct talks with Rayo Vallecano have been running in the background for some time, but the two clubs are yet to find agreement. Rayo are understood to feel Chelsea’s valuation is too low, and negotiations are currently circling around a compromise that would satisfy both sides. Chelsea want depth and competition on the left; Rayo want to be properly paid for one of their key defenders. Something has to give.

Maxence Lacroix

The reshaping does not stop at full-back. Chelsea remain keen on Maxence Lacroix, but this is a deal that requires patience. Crystal Palace are looking to bring in one, possibly two, centre-backs before they will sanction the France international’s exit. Until that happens, movement is limited to conversations and planning rather than signatures.

Once Palace secure their own reinforcements, this pursuit is expected to accelerate. By then, Chelsea’s summer may already be defined: big names out, serious money in, and a squad quietly being stripped back before the next wave of arrivals is allowed to land.
