Chelsea Signs Wigan Teenager Harrison Bettoni

Chelsea have dipped back into the EFL talent pool, completing the signing of highly rated teenager Harrison Bettoni from Wigan Athletic on a four-year deal.

The 18-year-old, born in Stockport and already hardened by a full season of senior football, arrives with League One minutes in his legs and a growing reputation as one of Wigan’s brightest recent academy products. Wigan, whose deal with the midfielder expired in June, will receive training compensation.

The London club plan a measured introduction. Bettoni is expected to spend the coming season split between Chelsea’s academy sides and the periphery of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad, close enough to feel the pace of Premier League preparation, far enough to develop without the full glare.

He has already had a taste of the big stage. Wigan trusted him in an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Arsenal, a leap from League One grounds to one of English football’s most scrutinised fixtures. That selection underlined how quickly he had climbed the ladder at the DW Stadium.
