Chelsea Signs Marco Palestra from Atalanta for €57m

Chelsea are closing in on one of the most expensive defensive signings of the summer, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London today ahead of a long-term move from Atalanta.

The right-back flew into the capital yesterday, and his camp has spent the last 24 hours ironing out the final details of a contract that underlines just how badly Chelsea wanted him. Inter were in the race. They never really stood a chance.

Chelsea blow Inter out of the water

Inter’s proposal reportedly stopped at around €2.5m per season. Chelsea simply doubled it. Palestra is set to earn €5m net per year at Stamford Bridge on a six-year deal, with an option for a seventh season – the kind of commitment that tells a player he is not just another signing, but a pillar for the rebuild.

Once the medical is completed, the paperwork will follow. Barring late drama, Palestra will sign today.

Big fee, bigger statement

The numbers underline the scale of the move. Reports in Italy put the agreement at €57m plus €3m in add-ons, with Atalanta also inserting a 10 per cent sell-on clause into the deal. That future cut hints at how highly they still rate the 22-year-old and how confident they are that his value will climb in England.

There is still a slight discrepancy in the reported figures. British transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has described the fee as “in excess of €50m,” while Sky Sport Italia have gone stronger with the €57m plus bonuses package. Either way, Atalanta are cashing in at a premium price.

For Chelsea, this is another heavy investment in youth and upside, another swing at securing a position for the long term. For Atalanta, it is a windfall now and a stake in whatever comes next for Palestra.

If his rise continues at the pace of the last two seasons, that 10 per cent could prove almost as valuable as today’s cheque.
