Chelsea Sign Chavarria as Defensive Reboot Continues

Chelsea are closing in on their latest defensive reboot piece, with Rayo Vallecano left-back Chavarria finally prised away from LaLiga after a summer-long stand-off over his fee.

Talks between the clubs have rumbled on since the end of June, with Rayo pointing to the 28-year-old’s £42.5million release clause and Chelsea flatly refusing to play anywhere near that number. The stalemate dragged, but the need at Stamford Bridge only grew.

Marc Cucurella’s surprise £51.7m move to Real Madrid earlier in the window ripped a hole down Chelsea’s left. A problem position suddenly became a priority. The pressure told.

Chelsea have now reached agreement on a deal understood to be worth an initial £16.2m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons — less than half the clause Rayo had been leaning on, and a figure far more in line with the London club’s valuation.

Chavarria, who helped Rayo reach last season’s Europa Conference League final before defeat to Crystal Palace in Leipzig in May, is expected to travel to the UK on Friday to undergo a medical and sign a long-term contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Left flank reshaped

Once the paperwork is done, Chavarria will walk straight into a battle for the starting role on the left of Chelsea’s defence, going head to head with highly rated Jorrel Hato. For new head coach Alonso, it is another key piece in a back line being aggressively reshaped.

The right side has already been addressed. Italy wing-back Marco Palestra arrived from Atalanta for £47m and has wasted little time making an impression on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia. Chavarria’s arrival would complete a new-look pair of wing-backs tasked with stretching the pitch and driving Alonso’s system.

He will also become Chelsea’s 11th signing of a frantic summer.

Trevoh Chalobah has agreed a move to Como, and he is unlikely to be the last centre-back out of the door. Axel Disasi is expected to follow, while Benoit Badiashile could yet be moved on if the right offer lands. Young defenders Mamadou Sarr and Josh Acheampong have been linked with loan spells to accelerate their development.

Interest is mounting in Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto, both drawing admiring glances as clubs circle around Chelsea’s bloated squad. Up front, the picture is no clearer: the futures of Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu all remain uncertain, with decisions looming over who Alonso trusts to lead the line.

In goal, Filip Jorgensen is poised to switch to Strasbourg, another piece of business within the BlueCo network that underlines the ownership’s multi-club strategy.

And hanging over it all is Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder continues to be linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid, a potential saga that could yet reshape Chelsea’s midfield plans in the final weeks of the window.

A raft of youngsters — Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Omari Kellyman, Reggie Walsh, Shim Mheuka and Ishe Samuels-Smith among them — are also candidates for loan moves, according to BBC Sport, as Chelsea try to balance minutes, development and an overflowing squad list.

Chavarria’s imminent arrival solves one problem on Alonso’s whiteboard. The real question is how many more pieces will move before this restless rebuild finally settles into something that looks like a stable Chelsea side.
