Chelsea Reject Leeds' Mudryk Bid but Talks Continue
Chelsea have turned down an opening offer from Leeds United for Mykhailo Mudryk, with the proposal described as well below what the London club were prepared to accept. Talks, though, are very much still alive.
Mudryk, desperate for regular football, is pushing for the switch to Elland Road. After serving a lengthy absence from the game following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, the winger wants a clean slate and consistent minutes rather than another stop-start season on the fringes at Stamford Bridge.
Leeds have surged to the front of the queue because they are prepared to take him on a straight loan with no option to buy. That detail matters. It keeps Chelsea in control of a player they committed an initial £62 million to in 2023, while giving Daniel Farke a high-upside attacking option without a long-term financial gamble.
If an agreement is finally struck, Mudryk would arrive as Leeds’ fifth signing of the summer. Farke’s rebuild is already well underway: Harry Wilson has come in to add guile, Tarik Muharemovic depth, James Trafford competition in goal, and Nico Elvedi experience at the back. Nottingham Forest await on Saturday in their Premier League opener, and Leeds want Mudryk in the building as soon as possible to sharpen their edge in the final third.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are in clear trimming mode under Xabi Alonso as the deadline looms. The squad is being cut back aggressively. Axel Disasi is on his way to Crystal Palace, Benoit Badiashile is heading for Napoli, and Atletico Madrid are closing in on a £65m move for Nicolas Jackson. Others, including Liam Delap and Dario Essugo, are also in limbo as the club reshapes around Alonso’s plans.
Leeds are not alone in circling Mudryk. Chelsea previously knocked back a loan proposal from Brentford, who wanted an option to buy written into the deal. Coventry City remain interested as well, with their own season beginning against Arsenal on Friday night. Those clubs are watching closely, but for now Leeds hold the advantage because their offer matches Chelsea’s preferred structure.
A move to Strasbourg or a switch to Serie A appears distant at this stage. Mudryk, 25, is understood to favour staying in England, both for footballing reasons and to avoid another major upheaval after a turbulent spell in his career.
Alonso, asked about the winger’s future, kept his cards close to his chest. “We will see, we still have time to decide and we don't have to rush on many decisions and at the right time, we will take them. At the moment, not yet,” he said, underlining Chelsea’s willingness to wait for the right proposal rather than blink first.
Until that arrives, Mudryk will continue to train with the Chelsea squad, working under Alonso while his representatives try to hammer out a solution. Leeds are expected to return with an improved offer as they chase one more injection of pace and unpredictability before the window closes.
The clock is ticking, the lines are open, and for Mudryk, the next few days could decide whether his restart comes in front of the Elland Road roar or somewhere else entirely in the English game.
