Carrick's First Premier League Season with Manchester United Begins
Michael Carrick steps into his first full Premier League season as permanent Manchester United manager on Saturday, and there is nowhere to hide. A lunchtime trip to newly promoted Hull City might look gentle on paper. It won’t feel that way if United stumble out of the blocks.
Third place last season brought Champions League football back to Old Trafford for the first time in three years. It also raised the bar. Carrick is no longer the caretaker with a free swing; he is the man expected to turn promise into something more substantial. Opening day, live cameras, a promoted side smelling opportunity – this is where the scrutiny begins.
Carrick’s United: new engine, same expectations
United arrive on Humberside with a reshaped core and a few early-season headaches. Matthijs de Ligt is still out with a lower back problem, while Manuel Ugarte’s knee injury threatens to wipe out much of his campaign. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is also unavailable.
Mason Mount, who picked up a foot injury in the 1–1 pre-season draw with PSG, faces a race against time to be involved at all. Benjamin Seško has shaken off a shin issue and is back in full training, but his readiness for competitive action remains on a knife-edge.
Those gaps have accelerated a midfield reboot. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are both in line for competitive debuts in the centre of the pitch, a clear sign of where Carrick wants to refresh his side.
Santos, a £50m arrival from Chelsea, has already banked valuable minutes. He featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies and looked increasingly comfortable dictating tempo and pressing high. Tielemans joined up later after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, but he underlined his sharpness by completing the full 90 minutes in the final warm-up game against AC Milan.
If Carrick’s United are to evolve, this is the axis that will drive it.
Heaven’s chance, Maguire’s responsibility
In defence, opportunity knocks for Ayden Heaven. With Lisandro Martínez managing only around half an hour of pre-season football, the Argentine is set for a place on the bench, joined by Kobbie Mainoo. That leaves Heaven to partner Harry Maguire at centre-back, a blend of youthful energy and hard-won experience.
Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw are expected to continue in the full-back roles, offering width and an outlet for United’s build-up. Behind them, Senne Lammens keeps the gloves after being trusted throughout the summer schedule.
It is a back line that has barely settled together, and Hull will know it. Carrick will expect Maguire to marshal the unit and set the tone in a stadium that will relish any sign of early nerves.
Fernandes at the heart, Mbeumo up top
Further forward, the structure is familiar even if some of the faces are not. Bruno Fernandes, the captain and creative heartbeat, operates in his usual number ten role, tasked with knitting together a front line that mixes pace, trickery and direct running.
On the flanks, Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha provide the width and incision. Diallo’s sharpness between the lines and Cunha’s ability to drive at defenders give United options both inside and out, especially against a Hull side likely to test United’s patience by sitting compact.
Up front, Bryan Mbeumo is poised to lead the line after an eye-catching pre-season. With Seško’s fitness still uncertain, Mbeumo’s form has opened the door for him to start the campaign as Carrick’s focal point in attack. His movement across the front and willingness to press from the front will be vital if United are to pin Hull back and suffocate any early optimism.
Put it together and United’s likely shape is clear: a 4-2-3-1 built on the new double pivot and Fernandes’ influence between the lines.
Manchester United predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Tielemans, Santos; Diallo, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.
Stage set at lunchtime
Kick-off at the MKM Stadium comes at 12:30 BST on Saturday, 22 August 2026, with the match broadcast live in the UK on TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate and HBO Max.
A newly promoted Hull, their crowd in full voice, against a Manchester United side returning to the Champions League and desperate to prove they belong back among the elite. For Carrick, this isn’t just an opener. It’s the first real test of whether his United can turn a promising rebuild into a relentless season.
